“Swarms big as cities”: UN chief says locust fight must intensify

The United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Saturday called for intensified international efforts to deal with a locust outbreak that has affected large parts of the African continent.

“The UN has issued an urgent appeal for assistance. I ask the international community to respond with speed and generosity to ensure an effective response and control the infestation while we still have the chance,” Guterres said on the sidelines of the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the AU in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on Tuesday disclosed that the Horn of Africa (HoR) region is the worst desert locust affected area from the three hot-spots of threatening locust activity globally.

According to the FAO, the increasing desert locust swarms in Ethiopia and Somalia have continued to migrate into Kenya, where they spread to 14 northern, central and southwest counties, reaching within 200 km of northeast Uganda and southeast South Sudan.

Guterres said the locust swarms affecting many parts of Africa are unprecedented in size and scope, with climate change playing a big part in aggravating the locust crisis.

“Today locust swarms are as big as major cities and it’s getting worse by the day. There is also a link between climate change and the unprecedented locust crisis plaguing Ethiopia and East Africa.

“Warmer seas mean more cyclones generating the perfect breeding ground for locusts,” said the UN Secretary General.

The desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria), which is considered as the most dangerous of the nearly one dozen species of locusts, is a major food security peril in desert areas across 20 countries, stretching from west Africa all the way to India, covering nearly 16 million square kilometers, according to the UN.

The contemplative piano-driven track features Eilish’s signature haunting whisper before hitting a string-drenched crescendo toward the song’s latter half. Matched with tense, somber lyrics, the song fits in with the extensive Bond movie song canon. “Fool me once, fool me twice,” she sings. “You’ll never see me cry, there’s just no time to die.”

Eilish, at 18, is now the youngest person to write and record a Bond theme song, joining the ranks of Sam Smith, Adele, Tina Turner, Madonna and Wings.

“It feels crazy to be a part of this in every way,” Eilish said in a statement. “To be able to score the theme song to a film that is part of such a legendary series is a huge honor. James Bond is the coolest film franchise ever to exist. I’m still in shock.”

Last week, Eilish performed the In Memoriam tribute at the 2020 Academy Awards ceremony, covering the Beatles’ “Yesterday.” The pop star swept the Grammy Awards this year, taking home all four major awards: Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. She also performed her song “When the Party’s Over” on the telecast.

You know what's wrong with Teal Swan's statement about the value of altruism in our society, it is sadly not true. We don't! But, if we don't admit even to ourselves that we have children for our own needs then we will never understand how to "honestly" feel about our children. I accepted this truth and learned the meaning of unconditional love that really is almost unconditional love. I love my child beyond anything.

But, in truth, there is so much sadness even within unconditional love.

lol, I guess I get a sense of satisfaction that my ex-wife as of not yet adjusted to the fact that her mini-me turned into my mini-me... :)

The latest act in the comedy began Friday, just before voting opened in the Nevada Democratic caucus. The Washington Post ran a story — sourced, I’m not joking, to “people familiar with the matter” — explaining that Bernie Sanders had been briefed that “Russia is attempting to help his presidential campaign as part of an effort to interfere with the Democratic contest.”

Sanders was quick to see through the gambit. “I’ll let you guess about one day before the Nevada caucus. Why do you think it came out?” He pointed to a Post reporter: “It was The Washington Post? Good friends.” The Post after all has spent years dumping on Sanders, a fervent critic of the paper’s billionaire creep of an owner, Jeff Bezos.

Intelligence officials and pundits have been screeching for years that patriotism demands voters reject the foreign agent Donald Trump and the Russian asset Bernie Sanders, and support a conventional establishment politician. Voters responded by moving toward Trump in national approval surveys and speeding Sanders to the top of the Democratic Party ticket. A more thorough disavowal of official propaganda would be difficult to imagine.

Russiagate will soon be four years old. For the first three years, it pushed parallel themes: that Russia had “interfered” in the 2016 election, and Trump conspired in the fraud.

The latter theme at times garnered literal around-the-clock coverage. CNN and MSNBC especially (but also the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Daily Beast and other major outlets) preached to audiences that the fall of the Trump administration was imminent. Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, news audiences were told, would reveal the Trump-Russia conspiracy and save the world.

After this story died a violent death when Mueller’s probe ended with no new charges, conventional wisdom shifted to a new gospel: Russiagate was about foreign interference.

Russiagate from the start smelled funny, like bad food. Multiple developments worsened the odor. Stories kept coming up wrong. There were too many unnamed sources, too frequently contradicting each other and/or overstating facts. Every hoofprint was a zebra’s. Outlets stopped worrying about relaying unconfirmed rumors, which is how terms like “blackmail,” “Trump,” “Russia” and even “Golden Showers” kept appearing in headlines, without proof there ever had been blackmail.

Moreover, while ordinary citizens like Reality Winner went straight to jail for leaking, senior government officials in the last four years repeatedly and with impunity leaked Russia-related tales. The leaks often pushed still more incorrect narratives, like for instance that that Trump aide Carter Page was a foreign agent.

But the biggest red flag of all was the way in which “Russia” over the last few years became shorthand to describe any brand of political deviance. I wrote this two years ago:

“Since Trump’s election, we’ve been told Putin was all or partly behind the lot of it: the Catalan independence movement, the Sanders campaign, Brexit, Jill Stein’s Green Party run, Black Lives Matter, the resignations of intra-party Trump critics Bob Corker and Jeff Flake…”

Unnamed “officials” have since added the Corbyn movement in England, the gilets jaunes, protesters in Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Colombia, militias in Africa, pro-government disinformation campaigns in Hong Kong, the presidential campaign of Tulsi Gabbard, and countless other undesirables to what has amounted to an ongoing, cumulative blacklist.

The extraordinary thing about this campaign to identify basically the entire universe of political thought outside of establishment Democrats in the U.S. as Russian assets has been the obvious projection involved.

The plot running through all of these stories has been the idea that Russia is trying to “undermine our democracy” by “sowing division.” But these charges are coming from the same people who spent the last four years describing Republicans as deplorable fascists, and progressives on the other side as racist, sexist, Nazis, and “digital brownshirts.”

This has resulted in a four-year parade of official cranks muttering about Russian efforts to “divide” us, when their own relentless message has been that America is besieged by a pair of Hitlerian movements on the left and right that must be put down at all costs. The only vision of “unity” they promote is one of obedience to the crackpot anti-utopia of neoliberalism that populations around the world are currently rejecting at the ballot box.

The core of the argument about Russian interference rested upon two major news stories: the hack of the DNC in 2016, and a campaign by the “Internet Research Agency” to push “divisive” social media content.

The former is a leak of true information about the correspondence of senior Democratic Party officials (Jeremy Corbyn was similarly accused of abetting Russian disinformation efforts when damning-but-real materials about the British National Health Service were leaked). The latter? A story about a group of silly memes, amplified a billion-fold by the American commercial news reports about these same efforts.

Did the Russians actually do these things? Maybe. It’s not confirmed either way. The sourcing even today remains tied to the same people who’ve lied about a thousand other things, both in the course of this story and before, from WMDs to the missile gap. As we saw this week, when officials quietly began admitting their ideas about “what Russia wants” rested upon perhaps “overstated” interpretations of intelligence, many of these narratives have been elaborate exercises in reading tea leaves. And they won’t let us see the tea leaves.

But if there is official Russian agency behind, say, the Internet Research Agency, those efforts pale in comparison to the enormous institutional effort in the United States to use the narrative for other ends.

The United States, whose spending on intelligence and the military alone nearly equals Russia’s GDP, could crush Russia for breakfast and take the rest of the day off for beer and volleyball. But officials have spent the last few years furiously constructing a popular vision of the Russian enemy far bigger than the actual country, which the likes of Rachel Maddow and Barack Obama not long ago were correctly calling a “gnat on the butt of an elephant.”

Last week was a perfect example. Intelligence officials briefed Sanders about a belief on their part that Russia wanted to “help” his campaign, although the nature of this assistance was not specific enough to be disclosed.

The Post noted “U.S. prosecutors found a Russian effort in 2016 to use social media to boost Sanders’s campaign against Hillary Clinton,” a typically deceptive construction.

Prosecutors asserted a Russian effort to boost Sanders rather than finding it as true. Nobody has seen the “proof” of this story, not even the Russians charged by Robert Mueller with the conspiracy to help Sanders. In fact, that evidence was deemed so sensitive that Mueller sought to prevent the Russian defendants from seeing it in discovery. The proof was somehow so dangerous, we had to overturn centuries of legal tradition to keep it hidden.

No matter, the press had no problem repeating the story, because why not? The notion that Russians want to help Sanders always fit nicely into establishment propaganda.

As a result, we get situations like last week, where there was an assertion about an unknown level of Russian support — presumably, social media boosting — that could not possibly equal the impact of a single news story leaked to the Post on the eve of the Nevada primary. Every news consumer in America heard that story last week. Russians could only dream of such saturation.

The logic of Russiagate is now beyond absurd. Vladimir Putin, somehow in perfect sync with American voting trends, seeks to elevate both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, apparently to compete against himself in the general election, in a desperate effort to suppress the terrifying political might of, say, Joe Biden. I doubt even Neera Tanden in the depths of a wine coma could believe this plot now.

That this is a dumb story is characteristic. The people pushing it don’t have any smart arguments left for remaining in power. Through decades of corporate giveaways, trickle-up economics, pointless wars, and authoritarianism, they’ve failed the entire population. They are the ones directly threatened by any hint that the population is awakening to its decades-long disenfranchisement.

They are also the ones who benefit most from “disinformation.” Who’s trying to divide us? Our own leaders, and as results like the Nevada primary show, the public now knows it.

Americans are avoiding Corona beer amid
coronavirus outbreak, survey finds

Some American beer drinkers are avoiding Corona, the beer, amid the deadly coronavirus outbreak, according to a new survey.

A surprising 38 percent of beer drinkers insisted that they would not, under any circumstances, buy Corona as the deadly virus spreads across the globe, according to the survey conducted by 5W Public Relations.

“There is no question that Corona beer is suffering because of the coronavirus,” Ronn Torossian, founder of 5WPR, said in a statement.

There is no known similarity between the beer and the virus — except for the name.

But Torossian explained how important the name was to the product’s branding.

“Could one imagine walking into a bar and saying ‘Hey, can I have a Corona?’ or ‘Pass me A Corona,’” he said.

In fact, 14 percent of respondents who said they regularly consume Corona beer admitted in the survey they would not order the beverage in public.

There was also some confusion as 16 percent of those surveyed said they were not sure whether the virus is related to Corona beer.

“While the brand has claimed that consumers understand there’s no linkage between the virus and the beer company, this is a disaster for the Corona brand,” said Torossian.

“After all, what brand wants to be linked to a virus which is killing people worldwide?”

The survey queried 737 American beer drinkers.

Despite the findings, some were proudly pounding back the brew.

A group of college students at the University of Albany recently threw an off-campus coronavirus-themed party that featured Corona beers.

Video of the gathering temporarily posted to the Barstool Albany Instagram account showed a bucket of iced Corona beers next to a person wearing a surgical mask, according to WGY News Radio.

The video was deleted.

Reps for AB InBev — the owner of Corona beer — did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Putin reveals plan to use body double

Moscow (AFP) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday revealed there was a secret plan to use a double to make public appearances for him, while insisting he vetoed it -- and that he is the real Putin.

Putin's comments showed that a conspiracy theory widespread on the internet that the Russian strongman has been impersonated over the years or even replaced by a lookalike is not entirely without basis.

TASS state news agency showed Putin a list of popular Russian-language Internet searches including "Putin double proof".

"Are you real?" the interviewer asked.

"Yes," said Putin.

He said he has never had a double but when asked if the idea had ever been discussed, he confirmed it had.

"I refused to have doubles," Putin said. "It was during the hardest times of the fight against terrorism."

Putin as prime minister and then president oversaw the second war against separatists in Chechnya from 1999 to 2000.

After Russian armed forces claimed victory, Islamist insurgent attacks became frequent in the North Caucasus while suicide bombers targeted Russia's main cities.

"Was that in the early 2000s?" asked interviewer Andrei Vandenko, who is doing a series of interviews with Putin to mark 20 years since he became president.

"Yes," said Putin.

"The double would go where things were dodgy?" asked Vandenko.

"Well yes, go, put in appearances," Putin confirmed.

These centred on the 67-year-old's apparent lack of signs of ageing, the disappearance of bags under his eyes and his seemingly worsening knowledge of German, which he learned when working as a Soviet agent in East Germany.

In 2015, Putin disappeared from public view for 10 days, unleashing a frenzy of speculation that he had once again become a father, been deposed in a palace coup, fallen ill, had cosmetic surgery or even died.

"It's boring without gossip," Putin said after reappearing.

Stronger Than Ever

It is hard to resist the urge to touch one’s face. This has been true, an irrefutable fact of human existence, for a while now. At the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History, there is a life-size sculptural reconstruction of one of our ancestors, Australopithecus sediba, who roamed the earth two million years ago. The creature is shown pressing a gnarled forefinger to an earlobe. Now, with the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, humanity is confronting a face-touching crisis. The virus has brought widespread confusion and uncertainty, but there is a consensus among public-health officials that the most basic step you can take to protect yourself and others is to wash your hands frequently and to keep those hands from colliding with your face.

Science tells us that this is easier said than done. One study of “hand-to-face contact rates” found that subjects touched their faces some fifteen times per hour. Researchers in Australia put the number at twenty-three. Another measure of the prevalence of face-touching is the social stigma against it. All of our lives, we have been told not to touch our faces, especially in public, in the interest of etiquette. It’s bad form to go digging for eye gunk at a dinner-party table; it’s unwise to trouble a zit during a job interview. There are particularly strong taboos against probing facial orifices—picking your nose, mining earwax, using your fingernail to pry loose the scrap of Swiss chard that has wound itself around a tooth—perhaps because the impulse to perform this kind of under-the-hood maintenance is so powerful.

Yet the prospect of social ostracism, the fear of grossing out friends and neighbors, the knowledge that we are liable to introduce bacteria to our bodies and offload it to others in the vicinity—none of this, apparently, is enough to stop us from jabbing and tugging and kneading our faces. A Washington Post article from last week detailed instances of politicians brushing hair from their brows and licking their fingertips mere seconds after warning Americans to refrain from such behaviors. In short, the coronavirus crisis has reminded us that, for all our airs and graces, we are filthy beasts. We wallow in oceans of schmutz; we smear additional schmutz on and in our faces, more or less continuously.

Face-touching haunts our history; it is immortalized in art and literature. Depictions of the expulsion from Eden show Adam with hands clapped over his eyes in shame. Images of hand-to-face contact echo in the songs of bards. Think of Romeo, gazing up at Juliet on the balcony: “See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand! / O, that I were a glove upon that hand, / That I might touch that cheek!” Consider some other icons: Rodin’s Thinker; Clement Clarke Moore’s St. Nicholas, “laying his finger aside of his nose”; Munch’s Screamer; Macaulay Culkin’s Screamer; Dr. Evil, with his pinky poised coquettishly on his lips; Beyoncé, holding her titanium “roboglove” to her cheek in the “Single Ladies” video. Writers in particular are inveterate face-touchers. Flip open a book to the author photo and you will find a head balanced on a hand, a pose whose mix of thoughtful, blasé, and smug is evidently international code for “I am a litterateur.” Face-touching inflects our modern language of memes and GIFs and SMS, from the facepalm hashtag to the see-, hear-, and speak-no-evil monkey emojis. What would life be like if strict segregation of hands and faces was in place? What would culture look like going forward? These are questions—as Arsenio Hall might put it, raising a slender finger to his temple—that make you go, “Hmmm.”

In the meantime, logistics are getting complicated. Without touching your face, it is hard to eat and drink, at least in the modern, urban way, gulping down a bagel and coffee on the run. It is difficult to turn a presentable face to the world. Fluffing up coiffure and smoothing down eyebrows, putting on makeup and keeping it shipshape, applying moisturizer and sunscreen—performing these actions hands-free is tricky. Communication is undermined. This morning, I called out to a friend across the street. To make my voice heard over the traffic, I encircled my mouth with my hands to form a little megaphone; my friend cupped a hand around his right ear. It was a face-touching two-fer. I probably should have waited for the light to change.

Some of the most eloquent statements we make require no spoken words. But our vocabulary of gestures is impoverished when hand-to-face contact is removed from the equation. Children on the playground will have to jettison the “Nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah-nyah” taunt, where the thumbs are thrust into ears and the fingers waggle. We will have to find a way to indicate snobbery that doesn’t involve lifting the tip of the nose. Obscene gestures will be particularly hard hit. It is interesting to note how many of these gestures, from the Italian chin flick to the South Asian Cutis, reflect the idea of contagion: launching an armada of microbes in the direction of your adversary.

Under the present conditions, it is advisable to avoid the kind of guy who does a lot of chin-flicking. Of course the more pressing challenge is to control one’s own reckless hand-to-face contact. The Brooklyn café where I am typing these words, cheek by jowl with other laptoppers, may well be a coronavirus incubator—every tabletop slathered in pathogens, each oat-milk cortado topped with a frothy dollop of SARS-CoV-2. It is a place where, you would think, a person could remember to stop touching his face, especially a person who is in the process of writing an article on the subject of face-touching. Yet in the last hour I must have rubbed my eyes, massaged my forehead, scratched my cheeks, itched my nose, yanked my earlobes, and stroked my chin dozens of times.

Brain researchers have offered a possible explanation. The authors of a study published in 2014 hypothesized that “spontaneous facial self-touch” helps to jump-start the memory, process information, and regulate emotions. Like many self-employed information-economy workers, I perform my job in a near-permanent state of blind panic, hunched over a screen for hours on end. Without that soothing self-touch, a little massage to calm the nerves and get the synapses firing, the entire enterprise might grind to a halt.

It is an irony of the moment: the moratorium on anxiety-alleviating hand-to-face action has come at a time when we’re extra anxious, more apt than ever to reflexively stretch our fingers toward the old bean in an attempt to restore equilibrium. Even those who appear to have little in the way of a functional interior life are affected. (“I haven’t touched my face in weeks,” Donald Trump told reporters last week. “I miss it.”) There is perhaps another, deeper reason why, now more than ever, we find ourselves inclined to clutch at our faces. In this new plague time, when life has turned surreal, when news of quarantines and skyrocketing infections fill the news and frightening prospects loom on the horizon, face-touching may meet a unconscious psychic-spiritual need, serving as a kind of existential spot-check. Eyes, ears, nose, mouth: yep, all present and accounted for. For the time being, at least, everything is in its place.

He starts off with the assertion that this virus isn't airborne, you can only get it by touching surfaces and then your face, therefore no big deal, people are worrying about nothing?

There is no way that someone like him doesn't know that this is an outrageous lie, obviously he was wheeled out on who know's whose decision (they should go to jail for criminal negligence and deliberate misleading of the public) to try to "reassure" the public.

It is clear now that the chief way this virus spreads is through airborne particles and in fact the virus can linger in the air, still contagious, for up to three hours. That is why it is so contagious and why any indoor space, particularly large spaces with central air conditioning systems are so dangerous right now. I honestly think that such criminal and gross negligence from a public figure deserves a lengthy jail sentence. People might die because of this utter moron.

Honestly, I think you should not go out at all, except if you live in an area where you can avoid all contact with people.

If you can get food delivered to your house, that's best, if not, ask a young person to do your shopping for you.

Essentially, you will have to become an agorophobe for a few months. It's tough, but necessary.

My parents are in a similar situation and I won't allow them to leave the house at all. Same for my small nephew, who has asthma. BTW, his dad has just returned from a trip to the US, Hawaii and West Coast and has coronavirus symptoms, though of course he can't be tested because officially the US isn't among the high-risk areas, like Italy and China. They went in a group and several of them are very ill and have all the symptoms of ncov.

Three weeks ago, the Republican chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee privately warned dozens of donors about the harrowing impact the coronavirus would have on the United States, while keeping the general public in the dark.

In a secret recording obtained by NPR (https://www.npr.org/2020/03/19/818192535/burr-recording-sparks-questions-about-private-comments-on-covid-19), North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr is heard giving attendees of a club luncheon a much different message than most federal government officials, especially President Trump, were giving the public at the time.

“There’s one thing that I can tell you about this,” Burr said, “It is much more aggressive in its transmission than anything that we have seen in recent history.” He added, “It is probably more akin to the 1918 pandemic.”

That pandemic claimed more than 600,000 American lives. While Burr’s public comments about the coronavirus at the time were rather tame, he provided facts about the dire reality of the virus to members of the Capitol Hill Club, a North Carolina group that consists of heads of businesses and organizations. According to federal records cited by NPR, the companies represented at the luncheon donated more than $100,000 to Burr’s election campaign in 2015 and 2016.

Burr warned the business leaders about effects on travel 13 days before the State Department released info on restrictions and 15 days before the Trump administration banned European travelers.

“Every company should be cognizant of the fact that you may have to alter your travel,” the Intelligence chairman said. “You may have to look at your employees and judge whether the trip they’re making to Europe is essential or whether it can be done on video conference. Why risk it?”

The senator also gave an early warning that school closings were more than likely going to occur. “There will be, I’m sure, times that communities, probably some in North Carolina, have a transmission rate where they say, let’s close schools for two weeks, everybody stay home,” Burr said.

All of this came from the senator on the very same day Trump was telling Americans that COVID-19 is “going to disappear. One day, It’s like a miracle. It will disappear.”

On Wednesday, the president was asked about the well-connected getting to the front of the line in regard to getting coronavirus tests, and Trump again said the quiet part out loud, casually remarking, “Perhaps that’s been the story of life.”

On Thursday, we learned that the Intelligence chairman meant to keep the quiet part to only elites and donors in his state — which raises questions about why Burr felt the need to keep what he knew contained. Was the fear of backlash from Trump stronger than his desire to save American lives?

The senator’s staff did not immediately return a request for comment.

In this most spiffing walk around Bermondsey Joolz goes to the Old Operating Theatre Museum and Herb Garret. A garret is a liveable space in an attic and this one was discovered above this church having been sealed up in the 19th century. You can attend a demonstration of how the operating theatre worked and see all the wonderful medical devices.

Nearby is Guy's Hospital with an alcove one belonging to the medieval London Bridge, containing a statue of John Keats.

Then we go up to Bermondsey Street with all its cafes and the surrounding area with its old leather factories and tanneries. If you are feeling hungry you can also go up the Maltby Street Market.

"NEW YORK — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo called for political and national unity Monday to fight the coronavirus after President Donald J. Trump said over the weekend he may order an enforceable quarantine for New York and surrounding areas in New Jersey and some parts of Connecticut as the pandemic continues to spread.

Gov. Cuomo called for unity to combat the pandemic, saying Trump referred to COVID-19 as “a war.”

“This is not a time for politics, partisanship or division,” Gov. Cuomo said. “If there is division at this time, the virus will defeat us.

“The virus doesn’t discriminate — it attacks everyone, and it attacks everywhere. There are no red states, and there are no blue states, and there are no red casualties and there are no blue casualties. It is red, white and blue. If there was ever a moment for unity, this is it.”

The 1,000-bed USNS Comfort ship arrived at Pier 88 in New York Harbor on Monday morning. The state’s first temporary medical center at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, which has 2,500 beds, opened Monday afternoon.

The additional 3,500 beds will not be used to treat COVID-19 patients, but will assist with anticipated hospital overflow, Gov. Cuomo said.

“It will be a relief valve for hospitals that are struggling now that are over capacity all across the city,” the governor said from Pier 88 on Monday with the vessel behind him. “About 3,500 beds to relieve the stress that our hospital system is facing.”

Gov. Cuomo announced a statewide public-private hospital plan to fight COVID-19 on Monday from the Javits Center. As part of the plan, public and private hospitals from across the state agreed to implement a balanced approach to fight the virus where hospitals approaching or exceed capacity can transfer patients to other hospitals that are not as full. The hospital systems across the state have also agreed to share supplies, staff and other resources.

Reaching 66,497 positive cases Monday, New York has roughly half of the nation’s confirmed cases of the coronavirus.

Just over 14 percent of positively infected New Yorkers are hospitalized, or 9,517 people, with 2,352 patients in the ICU.

The state reported a total of 1,218 virus-related deaths Saturday afternoon — up from 965 Sunday and 519 Friday.

The state’s most dense virus hot spots have remained downstate and in New York City. As of Sunday, the virus has been detected in 55 counties, including the city, with 33,768 positive cases in New York City, 8,519 cases in Westchester County, 6,445 in Nassau County, 5,023 cases in Suffolk County, 2,209 in Rockland County and 199 in Albany County."

The Reason You’re Exhausted Is ‘Moral Fatigue’

Every small decision feels like it carries the weight of life and
death — and it’s starting to take a toll

The decision-making that comes with social distancing is taking a toll on our mental health.

A few short weeks ago — in what now feels like a different lifetime — most of us went about our days making a series of low-impact decisions and not thinking twice about them. Bacon-egg-and-cheese sandwich from the cart outside the office for breakfast? Don’t mind if I do. A quick road trip to see your grandma upstate? She’ll be so happy to see us! Getting together with friends for a basketball game in the park or a few drinks in a bar? Why the hell not?

And then came the coronavirus. It took a while — and many confusing, unhelpful press conferences — before people really started to understand the magnitude of the novel coronavirus and COVID-19, the disease it causes. But now, most of us (hopefully) are more familiar with the concept of public health, and having to assess our own actions in terms of how they could impact the rest of the population. We’re faced with a lot of the same decisions from our pre-corona lives — except now, even the most mundane activities have turned into moral dilemmas. Whether it’s trying to decide if you should visit a sick family member, order delivery, take public transit, or take a trip to the grocery store, we now have to think through the potential implications of many of our totally normal, everyday actions and decisions in a way we never had to before, because of how they could affect others. This is called “moral fatigue,” and it’s exhausting.

As a culture that was all but burned out before the coronavirus pandemic hit, the past few weeks of seismic societal shifts have made us readjust in ways most of us never imagined. For many of us, our home is now our office (if we’re fortunate enough to still have a job) and doubles as a classroom for those with kids. Others are still forced to go out to work every day in strange, unrecognizable cities. And as of right now, we don’t have a clear end point to this new way of life, nor any sort of roadmap for navigating a situation like this.

When local and state governments first started enacting social distancing (though the World Health Organization is now transitioning to the term “physical distancing” to emphasize that we don’t have to give up social connections) policies, there was a clear adjustment period. As Americans, we’re not used to limiting our personal autonomy to help the greater good. This meant it was hard to convince people that even if they’re not in a high-risk group or worried about getting sick themselves, they should stay away from other people, in order to not spread coronavirus to more vulnerable groups. As the death toll rises, and reports of increasing numbers of younger people being hospitalized surface, we’re finally starting to understand how serious this pandemic is, and the impact each one of us can have on the outcomes — whether or not we realize it.

In most of our everyday lives, this comes into play when we’re making what used to be routine decisions. Let’s take the example of going to the grocery store. A few weeks ago, you probably would have made the trip without a second thought. But it’s no longer that simple. If you leave your home to go to the supermarket — a public place where everyone is touching everything from food to carts to money — it could put you in contact with the virus if someone coughs or sneezes near you or on something you touch. Of course, there’s the concern over whether you’ll get infected, but beyond that, we now have to consider whether we could then unknowingly pass the virus on to someone else at the store, on the bus, or in our own homes, and then whether that person will pass it along to others, and so on, and so on.

“We are now, in many ways, thinking about things that we wouldn’t have previously reflected on,” Dr. Michael Baur, associate professor of philosophy at Fordham University, who specializes in natural law and moral philosophy, tells Rolling Stone. “The chain of causality has always been there, but now it has become important for us to be more reflective about the multiple layers of complex causality and the real scope of our decision-making.”

As much as we’d like to believe that we’re all lone wolves who can fend for ourselves and prioritize our own best interests, in reality, that’s never how it worked. “It’s a fiction to think that we’re not already deeply connected to one another — we always have been,” Baur explains. “It’s just that the consequences now have been ratcheted up in a different way. And because of that, even our most simple actions and decisions can now have moral consequences that impact someone else’s life and health very significantly.”

And that is where moral fatigue comes in. Now that many routine aspects of our lives involve high-stakes decision-making, it’s a lot for our brains to process. According to Baur, this is because we usually allow ourselves to be lazy and oblivious to our interdependence, taking it for granted. “We’re now forced to be aware of it,” he says. “Now, small types of interaction can have severe consequences. It requires an added level of mental effort, carefulness and reflectiveness.”

Unsurprisingly, moral fatigue has taken a toll on our mental health. But of course, we’re not texting our friends and therapists about how exhausting it is to have to carefully consider so many different options before making a decision — moral fatigue is sneaky. It’s something that many now experience without recognizing the added mental burden.

“Routine activities now require critical thinking, and it’s leaving my patients feeling not only exhausted, but on edge,” Dr. Dion Metzger, a psychiatrist practicing in Atlanta, Georgia tells Rolling Stone. “It has actually led to people isolating even more than the quarantine requires. Instead of deciding to go through the drive-through or order in delivery for lunch, they choose to just eat what’s in the pantry.”

Similarly, Dr. Adam L. Fried, a professor of psychology at Midwestern University and a clinical psychologist with a private practice, has noticed that the overall stress of the coronavirus outbreak has taken a toll on many of his patients — on top of having to deal with moral fatigue. “For many, there seems to be more at stake in terms of these everyday decisions, both for ourselves, our loved ones and others around us,” he tells Rolling Stone. “Many of us aren’t accustomed to having to consider severe possible consequences resulting from normally mundane errands and tasks.”

Of course, the moral fatigue is taxing in itself, but we also have to keep in mind that making any type of difficult or ethically complex decision is stressful, even under the best circumstances. In other words, it’s not only the frequency at which we’re now making tough choices — the decision-making process itself can be mentally and emotionally exhausting when there is not a clear choice. “We know from research with professionals, such as health care workers, that having to make difficult ethical decisions, in which there may not be a clear ‘right answer,’ can be highly stressful and take an emotional toll on people,” Fried explains. “These can include feeling emotionally exhausted, increased feelings of self-doubt and burnout.”

Making these types of decisions feels like a “no win” situation: No matter what you decide, there will be positive and negative consequences. “The struggle to come up with the best answer, knowing that there may be no 100-percent ‘correct’ one, can leave many feeling frustrated and exhausted,” Fried says. “This is coupled with the anxiety associated with not knowing if things will worsen and not knowing when this situation will end.”

Until some sort of end is in sight, there are ways to help cope with moral fatigue and the stress of these higher-stakes decisions. First, Fried says that he encourages patients to recognize and acknowledge that we are in a truly unprecedented situation and that these decisions are tough. “Talking with supportive friends and family can be really helpful in terms of processing feelings, normalizing fears and doubts and talking through decision-making,” he adds. Metzger advises her patients not to overwhelm themselves with too many decisions at once. “Break it up into one day at a time,” she says. “Anxiety has a way of making everything feel urgent.”

And as exhausting as moral fatigue can be, we’re experiencing it because we’re taking the time to reflect more on how our decisions and actions may affect other people. Of course, situations like the one we’re in now can also have the opposite effect, Baur says, causing people to become more selfish and self-protective (we’re looking at you, toilet paper hoarders). But for now, it can help to focus on the potential good that can come from this shift in public mindset. “This is a sort of wake up call for all of us,” Baur says. “The added strain and effort, on the one hand, is unpleasant, and our lives are more complicated. But on the other hand, it’s potentially a very good thing, because the alternative is to live the usual oblivious life where we don’t recognize our interdependence.”

Netflix's new comedy series, 'Space Force' to premiere next month

Netflix announced that its new comedy series based on the concept of President Trump's newly launched space force will premiere next month.

The new series, starring famed comedic actor Steve Carell, will hit the streaming service on May 29, the company said on Wednesday.

Trump in 2018 directed the Pentagon to create a space force as the Department of Defense's sixth military service branch. The move has been a talking point for the president in the past, with supporters chanting "space force" at his rallies in the months following the directive.

According to The Associated Press, the new service was officially launched in late December 2019. Last month, it sent its first military communications satellite into space.

The series, also titled "Space Force," will follow Carell's character, a general who will head the new military branch, and other officials tasked with creating the "newest branch of the U.S. armed forces."

In addition to Carell, who portrayed the popular character Michael Scott in "The Office," the company said the series will also star actors John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz, Jimmy O. Yang, Diana Silvers and Lisa Kudrow.

Netflix released its first trailer of the new show, which it described as a "workplace comedy," early last year.

"On June 18, 2018, the federal government announced the creation of a 6th major division of the United States armed forces," the trailer reads as "Also sprach Zarathustra," featured in the film "2001: A Space Odyssey," plays in the background.

"The goal of the new branch is 'to defend satellites from attack' and 'perform other space-related tasks ... or something,' " it continues. "This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out."

The show is created by Carell with the help of Greg Daniels, a famed screenwriter, producer and former showrunner for "The Office."

I'd prefer to NOT entertain the dark musings of certain alt-media figures, many of whom run platforms of massive distortions by which they earn their living. Discern the language of fear and disempowerment they cast via media, targeting researchers, and those seeking "information".

The uber-paranoic, neo-apocalyptic rantings of wags who are are using energetic black magic spells to emotionally disempower their viewers spewing the constant litany of how "they" control us, in the so-called alt-media is yet another layer of the disconnect from our own native emotional state.

Humans in their native emotional intelligence tend towards freedom, positive outcomes, and spiritually nourishing energies. We are truly beings formed in the very image of our Creator, who placed inside us the quanta of Their very desire for hope, joy, and expansion.

When did constant invocations of doom, fear, and powerlessness become useful energy for the living souls? When did constant dark utterances become a substitute for affirmation of the Divine living spark inate within us?

At this moment in our collective unfolding, we are to be reminded that the powers of this universe desire FOR us; that we are to simply stand, and proclaim our divine immanence. That every WORD we speak is to be the affirmation of divine intent of Love towards the creation.

I want to assert that, yes, this is a dark hour. Many of us expected it as the ages shifted, and the dying powers of darkness rail against their own nothingness. It serves no purpose to allow thoughts of doom and capitulation to evil into our hearts. If "they" were winning, why this? Why now?

Stop allowing toxic communications into your inner sanctum. The way out is IN, the path forward is THROUGH. Your emotional bodies will respond to the subtle energies, be they dark or light. Use this time to meditate on the living light within each of you.

Do not allow these dark spells of fearful men to penetrate your core beingness. Meditate on what is good, what is wise, and what empowers. Turn off the fear porn, and soak in the essence of the eternal beings you ARE, not these humanoid skeletons of fear and death that feed on your lower energies.

If each of us summon our higher selves, no weapons formed against us will prosper. We are what we believe. Stop listening to liars!

"WWE resumed live shows without fans in Florida on Monday night as the entertainment service was reportedly deemed an “essential business” that can remain open during the state’s stay-at-home order.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings made the announcement at a Monday press briefing, according to ESPN, saying the ruling was made after “some conversation” with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office.

“I think initially there was a review that was done. They were not initially deemed an essential business,” Demings said.

“With some conversation with the governor’s office regarding the governor’s order, they were deemed an essential business. So therefore they were allowed to remain open.”

WWE, which is filmed in Orlando and Winter Park, had been airing taped shows since the state’s order was implemented on April 1, the report said.

“We believe it is now more important than ever to provide people with a diversion from these hard times,” the WWE said in a statement.

“We are producing content on a closed set with only essential personnel in attendance following appropriate guidelines while taking additional precautions to ensure the health and wellness of our performers and staff,” the statement continued."

A spokesman for Desantis told ESPN that WWE and other nationally viewed sports and media production services were declared essential “because they are critical to Florida’s economy.”

Health-care workers are the only people standing between everyday citizens and the novel coronavirus — even if those everyday citizens value their own personal freedom over things like public health, common sense or their own lives.

That dynamic was on full display in Denver, Colo., over the weekend, where the United States got its own bizarre Tiananmen Square-like photo moment — except instead of a protester standing up to a government tank, it was two health-care workers standing up to a “Land of the free”-loving couple in a truck.

Video and photos circulating online show two people in scrubs and masks blocking a crosswalk to stop a procession of far-right protesters en route to the state’s Capitol, where many of their ilk were already violating physical distancing rules to call for an end to the coronavirus lockdowns meant to slow the spread of the virus.

The two counter-protesters — a man and a woman — could be seen standing in the path of a large silver pickup truck on Sunday, refusing to budge while the vehicle’s occupants hurled a flurry of verbal abuse at them. A witness described them as “nurses” in his video, although their exact professions are unknown. They told another witness they were health-care workers.

“Go to China!” a middle-aged blonde woman in a U.S.A. shirt shouted at them from the pickup truck, while leaning out of the passenger’s window. “It’s a free country! America the free!” she declared, before slapping a sign reading “Land of the free” onto the windshield.

The two health-care workers did not move.

Videos and photos of the incident have circulated widely on the internet, where many have called it a perfect encapsulation of the anxiety and frustration emerging around the COVID-19 pandemic. The illness has killed more than 40,000 people in the United States alone, while lockdowns meant to slow its spread have tipped the world into a major recession. Many have become impatient with the lockdowns, although grouping up to protest those lockdowns appears to be a largely right-wing phenomenon at this point.

More than 12 million people have watched the Denver video on Twitter alone, where the angry woman has been dubbed “Karen” — an internet slang term for an irritating woman who demands to speak to the manager when she doesn’t get her way.

“The most un-American thing you can do is tell medical professionals who’re saving American lives to go to China,” Twitter user Michelle Sylvester wrote. “Bye Karen.”

“Here we see a racist Karen in her non-native habitat telling an Asian American nurse to ‘go to China,’” wrote Dr. Eugene Gu on Twitter. “Such fascinating yet peculiar behavior, since Karen may soon find herself in need of the nurse’s lifesaving care in the coming months.”

Another user described the woman as “COVID Karen,” adding: “This is America in one photo.”

The Colorado protest was one of more than a dozen across the United States over the weekend, where many conservative voices — including U.S. President Donald Trump — have urged Americans to defy scientist-recommended measures meant to keep everyone safe from the virus.

Trump appeared to turn the lockdown into another front in the U.S. culture war on Friday when he encouraged Americans to “LIBERATE” Michigan, Minnesota and Virginia — three states with Democratic governors running their lockdowns.

Pro-Trump signs have been a common sight at these protests, including the one in Denver.

“These people love our country,” Trump said at his daily press briefing in Washington on Sunday, when asked about the right-wing protests. “They want to get back to work.”

Health officials caution against all international travel. Returning travellers are legally obligated to self-isolate for 14 days, beginning March 26, in case they develop symptoms and to prevent spreading the virus to others. Some provinces and territories have also implemented additional recommendations or enforcement measures to ensure those returning to the area self-isolate.

Symptoms can include fever, cough and difficulty breathing — very similar to a cold or flu. Some people can develop a more severe illness. People most at risk of this include older adults and people with severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease. If you develop symptoms, contact public health authorities.

Unlike many other nations, the U.S. system is unique unto itself.

Is that really the point though? Money or lives? Local governments? Why can't Governors speak sense? Because they have none?

The simple solution if one is capable of independent thought, which it seems Trumpers are not capable of given the trash blocking their synapses, is to just explain that human rights are being given back by the 'controllers' in hope that the people having been granted their right to self-determination will use it responsibly. If not, then they go f*ck themselves.

bottom line is of course Trump...that guy is massively deranged...no one in their right mind could support this level of dysfunction.

And yes, I am aware that this sort of things pops up periodically, like it did with Black Lives Matter protests.

People want to create gridlock to send a message but don't seem to take into account folks getting hurt in the process.

Freedom does not mean endangering others. And yet we have anti-vaxxers and others who do so constantly. It's not a right.

It was only a matter of time before a big Hollywood star became the Tiger King, and now it’s happened: Joe Exotic will be played by Nicolas Cage.

The smash hit Netflix docuseries following zoo owner and aspiring politician Joe Exotic and his feud with animal rights activist Carole Baskin took the world by storm in March, with celebs such as Dax Shepard and Edward Norton clamoring to play the eccentric mulleted Joe Exotic.

For his part, Exotic, who is currently serving 22 years in prison for his murder-for-hire-plot against Baskin, wanted Brad Pitt or “Joe Dirt” (a k a David Spade) to play him. Online bettors, at a loss for any sports to gamble on during the coronavirus blackout, had their money on Kevin Bacon.

But now it’s official: The lucky actor will be Cage. The scripted show will be eight episodes long, from Dan Lagana, showrunner of Netflix’s two-season mockumentary series “American Vandal,” according to Variety.

The show, which will be produced by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television Studios, doesn’t yet have a premiere date. No word either on which network or platform it will appear on.

Back in June 2019, Lagana bought the rights to Leif Reigstad’s Texas Monthly article “Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild.”

Cage, 56, might be the perfect choice for the role. Like Exotic, he’s also known for larger than life antics, such as pre-buying his own pyramid-shaped mausoleum or going full Method to get into character, even if it means snorting saccharine or hiring a “drinking coach.”

It will mark the first TV role from Cage, who is also signed up to be playing himself in a movie about himself called “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.”
