View Full Version : Telescope For My Birthday.

Frances
4th October 2013, 18:07
It's my birthday, and the family have clubbed together and bought me a telescope.

July 1994 Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was sucked into Jupiter I saw it on TV.

April 1997 Comet Hale - Bopp flew past I saw it with my binoculars.

2013 Comet Ison will do a fly past our earth.

I hope to have my new telescope assembled by then. I am no genius when it comes to these things so in your thoughts send me guidance and patience to do the assembly.
Any tips you may want to send me will be appreciated also.
Frances.

This is the first thread I have ever done. ('~')

Hello Frances

My advice: once assembled ensure that you look through the correct end. lol

Enjoy your present. JP

Happy Birthday Frances - I hope today day has been really special and full of fun and laughter and that the year ahead brings you a special gift every day. I too would LOVE to have a telescope. Don't be surprised if, when you look through it, you see someone waving back at you . . . :)

Hello Daft Ada, my telescope is Sky Watcher BK1309EQ2.
I have no clue at the moment but I will try to learn.
It will be a time thing which I will enjoy doing as much as I will enjoy looking out to the universe.

Thank you all for your kind words.
Frances.

It would be good Linda if somebody waved back at me, but you know John I could be looking through the wrong end.

Hi Frances xx That's a nice little five inch reflector. Are you familiar with a program called Stellarium? It's a program which you run on your pc or mac and when you have entered your longitude and latitude, it will show you an exact copy of what you will see in the sky from your house, so you can sit in your armchair and study it then go outside and look for real knowing what is where. Get it here

http://www.stellarium.org/

I do hope you won't be disappointed, people think you will see lot's of wonders when they get a scope but in fact other than looking at the moon and Jupiter you won't see much more than pinpoints of light, you should get a good view of this comet when it gets here though. You will see the moons around Jupiter as well, but you have to persevere and wait for a good clear night, winter nights are best, cold stable air that reduces the amount of movement in the atmosphere and gives stable views.
How many eye pieces did you get with it? it's the eye piece that sets the magnification so you will need a few to increase to higher magnifications.

Have a look on forums like this one they mention your scope here

Thank you Daft Ada for your information I will use it. I got one eye piece which is used for viewing the moon as the moon gives off a lot of light and can affect the image.
There will be other adaptions I can get once I get my head around the basics.
Frances.

This site is about starting out with a telescope, http://www.naasbeginners.co.uk/Articles/Equipment/What_can_be_seen/What_can_be_seen.htm

I was curious as to what could be seen, as I have a cheap camera with 26x optical zoom & a nasty plastic tripod & managed to get a blurry pic of the Galilean moons & Jupiter.

I really want a telescope now !

This is mine just to make you drool :D fully computerised so you align it to a couple of stars and it will track and stay locked on whatever you are looking at as the ball of rock we are all standing on rotates :D

I have just managed to get this far. I have now to fit a motorised unit to it, I am dreading that part as it can be operated by remote.

There is probably a local astronomy club in your area who would be only too happy to help you get it up & running.
