Hubble’s scientists debunk theory of Comet ISON being a UFO

It’s not at all certain that Comet ISON will turn out to be the “comet of the century,” as hoped, but a couple of things are certain: It’s not an alien spaceship, and it hasn’t split up into three pieces. Those were apparently questions on the minds of some folks last month, thanks to a flurry of videos and blog postings based on imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope’s archives. The hoohah got hot enough to merit an official response, posted to the Space Telescope Science Institute’sarchive website and its ISON Blog. It all started with a series of images captured by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 UVIS instrument on April 30. Various exposures were combined to produce a widely distributed color picture of Comet ISON against a background field of stars. When Internet sleuths took a close look at the archived image, it looked as if there were three separate objects hiding in the glare of ISON’s coma. Was ISON breaking up?
Was the comet being escorted by two alien spacecraft? No. Just no.

Today we offer a guest guest post from Dr. Richard L. White. Dr. White is an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute and is the Principal Investigator for the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescope (MAST). He is a coauthor on several hundred papers covering topics ranging from cosmology, quasars, stars and galaxies to astronomical data processing and data mining. This article was previously posted at the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes news feed. For more information you can also check out our post about making the Hubble color image of Comet ISON.

Some bloggers have noted that the Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) Hubble images seen here have some surprising features. Here we briefly explain the origin of the image structures.

Quick summary: The image is the result of combining three exposures that produce the three components, and the shapes are produced by the combined motion of the Hubble telescope and the comet. The images look exactly as expected.

The image from April 30, 2013 (released on July 16, 2013) using the F606W filter has attracted the most attention. That image (shown above) is the average of three separate Hubble exposures. The three exposures are available individually for display or download from the web page, as is the combined image

http://imgsrc.hubblesite.org/hu/hs-media/ckeditor/picture/data/5229059ec17e1731d2000001/content_exposure1.jpghttp://imgsrc.hubblesite.org/hu/hs-media/ckeditor/picture/data/522905b7c17e177141000001/content_exposure2.jpghttp://imgsrc.hubblesite.org/hu/hs-media/ckeditor/picture/data/522905c4c17e172640000008/content_exposure3.jpg

You can see that the three parts of the structure in the combined image result from the three different exposures. The comet itself does not have three pieces. They are an artifact that results from adding up the separate exposures.

The comet does not look the same in each exposure because both the comet and the Hubble telescope are moving during the exposure. The comet is blurred, just as a picture taken out the window of a moving car will be blurred. For this image the Hubble telescope was pointing very steadily and accurately at the background stars and galaxies rather than tracking the comet.

In this case, the largest part of the blurring is due to the motion of Hubble itself rather than the motion of the comet. Hubble is orbiting the Earth every 95 minutes. The third exposure ended 46 minutes after the start of the first exposure. During that time the telescope moved from one side of its orbit to the other, a distance of about 8000 miles (~13,000 km). Because the comet is relatively nearby (compared with the distant stars and galaxies), its apparent position among the stars changes due to the different viewing position. This effect is known as parallax. It is expected when observing solar system targets, and can produce very obvious motion or blurring in images as Hubble whips around the Earth.

There is a nice discussion of the effects of parallax on the Comet ISON images in this YouTube video. It includes detailed modeling of the parallax in these particular images and shows that the observed pattern is exactly what is expected.

This is really convincing SW, and I think that since the next images of the comet do not support this triple image then it is probably true. However I saw this video and wanted to share.

Thank you Spir.. (drat I will have to get used to your new name!) for bringing this thread back into the forum Spirit Walker.

Now I don't want to start deliberately fear mongering but I urge you all to watch this video....all of it if you can.

It might just be the most important video you will ever watch.............if it is true!

If you have not got the time then certainly fast forward to the last 35 minutes and listen to what is said.
If there is any truth in what is being said then we simply cannot ignore it and must discuss all the ramifications.

This also ties in with Tribes thread " Is it a bird is a plane the annunaki winged" thread too and I also believe has some bearing on the weird noises recorded world wide also.

If we accept some of this as being partially true, it will also make sense of Fema , underground bases, and the threat from October 31st we have spoken of previously and much much more.....

I have much more I would like to add but perhaps it best you all see what this is about before I begin speculating.

I would like to thank my conspiracy buddy "wide awake" for helping locate this video and pray it is a hoax.....or is it?

With all due respect, my gut tells me this Tolec is a disinfo source. I cannot offer you any proof I am afraid altaira.

Tolec and his "messages" are the types of things we "want" to believe, but if we are totally honest with ourselves, in wanting to believe we have a tendancy to ignore and gloss over the things that do not sound or feel right or are simple ridiculous fantasy, I have been guilty of this many times before but wising up.

Just try and be objective and honest with yourself, be careful, this is a "mind" field we need to traverse..of course I could be wrong...

We have always felt something "not right" about Tolec, for the same reason, that it is typical disinformation glossiness. Too much glitter. Not enough feel of full truth.

Well this time he has tied his colours to the mast, if this by some freak of nature turns out to be just a comet we can chuck him definitively in the trash with all the others.

True SW, and I do not believe what Tolec or any chanller says anyway. Their messages I believe should be kept for themselves. I posted this just as an alternative view not to be accepted as true just as possibility. Also not to be taken literally as a biosphere Xanterexx but to be considered that this can be an artificial object. Why not? I think as well it is more likely a comet but then remember A. Collier who also said there is a mini solar system coming to Earth... However I keep in mind that he too channels messages so I give a doubt to this too. My personal opinion at this moment is that I still don't know enough to jump into any conclusions, neither I have some inner knowing about ISON. But it is interesting to follow ans see what we will see. :)

In a nutshell

consider this. The people who are insisting ISON is a UGFO (or 3 UFOs!!) and are predicting that ISON is going to destroy Earth, or is going to trigger solar flares, or is a Sign from God, are the very same people who predicted, with equal swagger and confidence, that another comet, Elenin, would cause havoc and kill us all when it passed this way a few years ago. It sailed past harmlessly, of course, and they have conveniently forgotten all about that.

LOS ANGELES — A spacecraft that gave scientists their first peek into a comet's icy interior will explore no more, NASA said Friday.

The space agency declared an end to the Deep Impact spacecraft after it unexpectedly fell silent. Engineers tried for a month to regain contact, but lost hope.

Mission scientist Jessica Sunshine of the University of Maryland said she was "saddened at the loss of an old friend."

Deep Impact put on a celestial fireworks display July 4, 2005, when it fired a projectile into comet Tempel 1. The high-speed impact carved a crater and hurled a plume of debris into space, giving scientists their first glimpse of the comet's frozen primordial ingredients.

Afterward, Deep Impact journeyed toward comet Hartley 2, flying through a blizzard of ice particles and escaping unharmed. It later flew by the distant comet Garradd and also observed stars in search of Earth-sized planets outside the solar system.

Before Deep Impact lost contact last month, it was studying another comet named Ison that could shine as bright as the moon when it makes a close swing by Earth in November.

The cause of the failure was unknown, but engineers suspect the spacecraft lost control, causing its antenna and solar panels to point in the wrong direction. Without power flowing to its onboard computer, Deep Impact likely froze to death.

Scientists were disappointed at the timing of the silence that cut short their observations of comet Ison and future plans.

"It is hard to say goodbye," said mission scientist Lori Feaga of the University of Maryland.

NASA | Chasing Comet ISON

http://youtu.be/m3Ko8knZ7N0

Published on 24 Sep 2013

Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) may become a dazzling sight as it traverses the inner solar system in late 2013. During the weeks before its Nov. 28 close approach to the sun, the comet will be observable with small telescopes, and binoculars. Observatories around the world and in space will track the comet during its scorching trek around the sun. If ISON survives its searing solar passage, which seems likely but is not certain, the comet may be visible to the unaided eye in the pre-dawn sky during December.
This animation shows two views of comet ISON's path through the inner solar system. The first is a view following the comet along its orbit. The second is a view perpendicular to ISON's orbit.
Like all comets, ISON is a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust. Often described as "dirty snowballs," comets emit gas and dust whenever they venture near enough to the sun that the icy material transforms from a solid to gas, a process called sublimation. Jets powered by sublimating ice also release dust, which reflects sunlight and brightens the comet.

On Oct. 1, ISON passes within about 6.5 million miles (10.5 million km) of Mars. As it goes by, it may be visible to some of NASA's Mars rovers and satellites, including the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and Curiosity.

Then, on Nov. 28, ISON will make a sweltering passage around the sun. The comet will approach within about 730,000 miles (1.2 million km) of its visible surface, which classifies ISON as a sungrazing comet. In late November, its icy material will furiously sublimate and release torrents of dust as the surface erodes under the sun's fierce heat, all as sun-monitoring satellites look on. Around this time, the comet may become bright enough to glimpse just by holding up a hand to block the sun's glare.

Sungrazing comets often shed large fragments or even completely disrupt following close encounters with the sun, but for ISON neither fate is a forgone conclusion. Whatever happens, scientists will be able to learn more about comets by how it interacts with the sun's tenuous atmosphere, the corona.

Following ISON's solar swingby, the comet will depart the sun and move toward Earth, appearing in morning twilight through December. The comet will swing past Earth on Dec. 26, approaching within 39.9 million miles (64.2 million km) or about 167 times farther than the moon.

Well if Elenin accomplished anything it was to make people too scared to talk about catastrophic possibilities or else they would be labelled fear mongers. Maybe the whole thing was created to discredit those "Chicken Littles" who feel it in their gut that one day the sky really will fall. I don't know how or when but the universe is cyclical so it will definitely happen again. What I do know for sure is that our governments are shady as you know what and they are up to something.

This video is very well done. Is it true?? Who knows, but it's something to think about. If it scares you into buying some food and water...even better.

Hmm, from this website: http://www.rememberthe13th.com/

NASA has made a historic discovery that will shake the entire planet. This announcement will be released to the media on November 13th, 2013. It will be a day to remember and One for the history books. Spread the word to your family & friends and sign up to stay updated!

Note: Originally posted to be exposed on 11/13.. now to be released on 10/6

Probably hype, I'm guessing, due to pretty strong language: "A historic discovery that will shake the planet"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Below is what is posted on the NASA website (http://notice.usa.gov/):

Due to the lapse in federal government funding, this website is not available.
We sincerely regret this inconvenience.

For information about available government services, visit USA.gov.

So NASA is considered a non-essential agency! Quite an interesting time for them to be shut down.

ISON is moving off its projected track, probably due to the large jet coming out of it, and no pictures from Hubble have been released since July !!!

The total brightness of the comet within a 0".24-diameter aperture remained unchanged within 0.03 mag over the 19-hr observing window. Broadband photometry yielded Af(rho) = 1376 cm at 589 nm, and 1281 cm at 433 nm, consistent with a red slope of 5 percent per 0.1 micron for the coma dust. A well-defined jet is visible after removing the 1/r brightness distribution. The jet is centered on position angle 290 deg, with a cone angle of 45 deg, a projected length of 1".6, and a slight curvature towards the north near the end. No temporal change in the morphology is observed over the three epochs, suggesting that the jet is circumpolar.

THE IMPENDING DEMISE OF COMET ISON

Resume. We present evidence to conclude that comet C/2012 S1 ISON is about to turn off or disintegrate.

1. THE SECULAR LIGHT CURVES

For some years we have been developing the concept of Secular Light Curves (see references 1-11), a scientific way to show the brightness history of a comet. The light curves are presented in two phase spaces, the reduced magnitude vs log of the Sun’s distance, R, and the reduced magnitude vs time. Reduced means that the comet-Earth distance has been removed and only the dependence on the distance to the Sun (R) remains. As an example in Figure 1 we show the secular light curve of the famous comet 1P/Halley.

MAGNITUDE PREDICTION

Everybody wants to know the brightness of the comet in the next few weeks/months. This is not easy to figure out. Comet ISON is not following the rules and it is following a brightness law quite different from normal comets. After about 40 hours of work, I have been able to complete and update an analysis of the visual and CCD-R data. The details are complex and are presented in the next section. To keep it simple I am going to give the result next. The brightness law that came out for visual observations is:

m(Delta, R, 0) = 8.12 + 5 Log Delta + 2.40 Log R + 0.01 alpha

where Delta is the distance to the Earth, R the distance to the Sun and alpha is the phase angle . This law may be modified as soon as new data comes in.
The law is very very shallow (n=0.97). If fact it is so shallow that it is almost flat ..... again. The brightness prediction using this law is this

2013 visual m
October 15 10.0
October 20 9.8
October 25 9.5
October 30 8.9
November 5 8.8 ?
November 10 8.5 ?
November 15 8.2 ??
November 20 7.9 ???
November 25 7.5 ???
November 28 6.6 ?????

The interrogation signs indicate that the comet is entering into uncharted territory and prediction becomes risky.
One thing is clear: the comet is not increasing in brightness significantly, so do not expect a celestial show. The data up to October 16th indicates that this is not going to happen. The prediction shows that it may not even reach to naked eye magnitude.
Sorry folks.

This seems an old information and I almost dismissed it as true because ISON being a accompanied by 2 spaceships was debunked a few weeks ago. However there is an article that was piblished today (the link is at the bottom of my comment) which again summons the idea of ISON bot being just a comet. The videos below show again that NASA forged the information very well. I am still puzzled about everything but we shall see soon.

Sungrazing comets are a special class of comets that come very close to the sun at their nearest approach, a point called perihelion. To be considered a sungrazer, a comet needs to get within about 850,000 miles from the sun at perihelion. Many come even closer, even to within a few thousand miles.

Being so close to the sun is very hard on comets for many reasons. They are subjected to a lot of solar radiation which boils off their water or other volatiles. The physical push of the radiation and the solar wind also helps form the tails. And as they get closer to the sun, the comets experience extremely strong tidal forces, or gravitational stress. In this hostile environment, many sungrazers do not survive their trip around the sun. Although they don't actually crash into the solar surface, the sun is able to destroy them anyway.

Many sungrazing comets follow a similar orbit, called the Kreutz Path, and collectively belong to a population called the Kreutz Group. In fact, close to 85% of the sungrazers seen by the SOHO satellite are on this orbital highway. Scientists think one extremely large sungrazing comet broke up hundreds, or even thousands, of years ago, and the current comets on the Kreutz Path are the leftover fragments of it. As clumps of remnants make their way back around the sun, we experience a sharp increase in sungrazing comets, which appears to be going on now. Comet Lovejoy, which reached perihelion on December 15, 2011 is the best known recent Kreutz-group sungrazer. And so far, it is the only one that NASA's solar-observing fleet has seen survive its trip around the sun.

Comet ISON, an upcoming sungrazer with a perihelion of 730,000 miles on November 28, 2013, is not on the Kreutz Path. In fact, ISON's orbit suggests that it may gain enough momentum to escape the solar system entirely, and never return. Before it does so, it will pass within about 40 million miles from Earth on December 26th. Assuming it survives its trip around the sun.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1yH_DuC88M

...........What makes the issue even more mysterious is an alleged video of comet ISON that appears to show the nucleus being circled by two UFOs. The video is claimed to be from a Chinese satellite, however, the Chinese Space Agency does not contain the video on its website. Furthermore, the resolution is too clear for such a distant object suggesting the video has been forged. Why would someone go to the trouble to create a fake video of comet ISON comprising two cylindrical UFOs circling a nucleus? Was it to generate confusion over the true composition of comet ISON or to call attention to it being accompanied by UFOs?.............

One thing is clear so far, a Hubble image of comet ISON taken in April does appear to show that it comprises three objects making up its nucleus – two of which are highly symmetrical cylinder shaped. Could it be that the image is simply an overlay of three different time exposures as Hubble astronomers suggest? In this scenario favored by NASA, the most we can hope for is that ISON spectacularly expands to become the “comet of the century.” Alternatively, does Comet ISON comprise two UFOs accompanying its nucleus as depicted in the alleged Chinese satellite imagery, or is it a large biosphere accompanied by two escort ships? We will have to wait for the truth to emerge as Comet ISON makes its closest approach to the sun in November 2013. http://exopolitics.org/is-comet-ison-accompanied-by-ufos/

Nothing drastic is going to happen,(not for us anyway) there is some speculation about whether it is one object or not, and whether it will survive the "slingshot" around the Sun, the only dates that are of interest are those when we should be able to get a good view of it.

This is interesting and informative article about ISON. The information below is very mainstream, all you need to know in terms of official info. I mean there is truth in it as it comes from "reliable scientific sources" and the one that is just a deception is left to those who question everything. There is a funny lighthearted quiz on this page to test your comet knowledge. It turned out I have a serous comet knowledge which is far from the truth but just says how difficult it is :). There are also two short videos to point you at the right direction if you want to observe ISON with naked eye as it is visible now.

Potentially Dazzling Comet ISON Now Visible to Naked Eye After Outburst

Comet ISON lightens up, literally

Comet ISON is now in full outburst mode, becoming many times brighter over just the past few days. Astronomers measure the brightness of objects in the night sky as magnitude, in which the brighter an object is, the lower its magnitude number. The human eye can perceive objects as faint as

According to veteran comet observer, John Bortle, Comet ISON was shining only at magnitude +8.5 on Monday (Nov. 11) morning — more than six times too dim to be visible to the unaided eye. But by Wednesday morning, the comet’s brightness had increased three-fold brightening to +7.3. [8 Essential Facts About Comet ISON]

If that was a surprise, an even bigger one was waiting for Bortle on Thursday morning (Nov. 14).

"Ready to go at 4:45 a.m. but I couldn't figure out what the funny-looking, blotted, star that came into view was," Bortle said. "[Was my] seeing that bad? But, no, the 'blotted star' was, in fact, at the comet's position! Getting to the point, the little but intensely condensed, globular cluster-looking comet was a whopping magnitude 5.4 — two full magnitudes brighter than just 24 hours ago! This makes for a three magnitude total rise since my observation on Monday."

In just 72 hours, Comet ISON increased nearly 16 times in brightness.

Carl Hergenrother, acting co-coordinator of the comet section of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers, has confirmed Bortle's observations.

"ISON has dramatically brightened over the past few days," Hergenrother told SPACE.com via email. "The latest observations put the comet around magnitude 5.7 to 6.1 which is a 2+ magnitude increase from this weekend. My own observations from this morning in 10x50 and 30x125 binoculars show a nice 'lollipop' comet with a very condensed blue-green head and a long narrow tail. The tail was over 1 degree in length even in the 10x50s. The comet may continue to brighten as the outburst is still in its early stages."

Unmistakable comet outburst

Long Island amateur Dennis Wilde was also impressed by ISON’s appearance in the predawn sky Thursday morning.

Mercury with Comets ISON and Lovejoy Sky MapPin It An hour before sunrise on Monday morning, November 18, catch a sight of the elusive planet Mercury, with brightening Comets ISON and Lovejoy as a bonus.
Credit: Starry Night SoftwareView full size image
"ISON, while not as large as the full moon, was an impressive sight in the eyepiece," Wilde said. "The coma was compact with a very bright apparent nucleus, very bright green in color. The tail was very thin and bright near the coma and widened slightly as it extended out to almost 3.5 degrees as seen in the 15". It wasn't huge or extraordinarily bright but it was a great view nonetheless. I viewed the coma at up to 490x and it was uniformly dense and bright. There was no indication of the start of any breakup. After finding it with the telescope it was quite easy to pick out the coma with the [binoculars]."

This outburst is not completely unusual since ISON has demonstrated short "spurts" of brightening over the past few weeks, but they were quickly followed by abrupt slow-down in its brightening trend.

So will the current outburst persist until the comet arrives at the sun on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 28)?

"Whether by chance we have caught the comet at the peak of the outburst is certainly debatable (to me rather improbable) and it may well still brighten further," Bortle said.

"The comet may continue to brighten as the outburst is still in its early stages," Hergenrother said. "Whether this outburst will be a short-lived event or the beginning of a more active phase is still to be seen."

This sudden upsurge in brightness is certainly very good for a comet that until now seemed to be running well behind in brightness predictions. It seems now that we can feel a little more optimistic about this enigmatic object putting on show for us later this month on into early December.

Comet ISON was first discovered by Russian amateur astronomers Vitali Nevski and Artyom Novichonok in September 2012. The comet is officially designated C/2012 S1 (ISON), with ISON standing for International Scientific Optical Network.

The comet is rapidly approaching its Nov. 28 perihelion and as a result it is becoming more and more difficult to observe low near the east-southeast horizon in the dawn sky. Still, observers with access to a clear horizon may be able to follow ISON for about another week.

Next Monday morning (Nov. 18), ISON will be passing close to the bright 1st magnitude star Spica in Virgo. Using the handle of the Big Dipper, sweep an arc to the brilliant orange star Arcturus. Then continue that arc on to Spica. Using binoculars, ISON should still be readily be visible as a fuzzy star with a short tail.

Will it still be visible to the unaided eye? Check it out for yourself!

I just wish I could see the damned thing!! I've been up at times like 4:45am only in the last week or so and haven't been able to see anything against the first light glow in the east. The comet has by now crossed the Earth's orbit and is inward towards the Sun, so will be visible in the east just before sunrise.... But I'm yet to see it.... I'm just gonna have to try harder, obviously!

By the way, the real fun will be in January when the Earth crosses the path of the comet, and flies through the debris trail. Crossing a comet's orbital path is the common source of all meteor showers, so there should be some fireworks about then...
