The link to this short video has just been loaded onto the BBC Technology Website and apologies as I'm not sure how to post BBC vids.

Crossrail - a new rail network buried under London's streets - is the largest infrastructure project in Europe and when completed it is expected to carry around 200 million passengers a year.

But the city already has a huge network of underground tunnels - some are almost 100 years old - and engineers need to ensure that work on Crossrail does not disturb them. Damage to an older tunnel could affect structures on the surface.

According to the video, work is being carried out only a couple of metres below existing tunnels ( ) but any disturbance will show up really quickly because the smart sensors embedded in the tunnel are able to show this in "real time". That's all right then (I guess . . . . )

Apart from the interest in the news item itself, when thinking about high speed trains/Magluv type tube trains between countries, I had never before considered the "smart tunnel" and just thought about the train itself. This switch in concept is really very important . . . as in smart roads, smart houses, smart whatever, etc.
