saw the plough formation in the sky this eve and was hoping some one may tell us if there is a reason as to why?
it was due north jjc

Well, I'm hoping this isn't one of those tie yourself in knots philosophy/ ontological / PA type questions :nails: & I will give a straight forward answer.

Some things come & go in the night sky through out the year, but the "plough" or "big dipper" isn't one of them it is visible all year from the UK & the north in general, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ursa_Major

This free software shows you where everything is in the sky at any given time in your location, you can get your exact co-ordinates off google earth or just put in nearest city http://www.stellarium.org/

I had never heard the Big Dipper referred to as the plough.

Thanks for clarifying, Spiral, as to what Jcc was referring to - as I was scratching my head. Must be a UK thing?

Yes Babs we call it the plough and sometimes the saucepan.
