Untold number of people missing after large explosion in NYC
By Staff Writer
NEW YORK CITY (INTELLIHUB) —Early this morning there was an explosion in downtown Manhattan, causing two buildings to collapse. One person has already been confirmed dead, dozens others confirmed injured, and an untold number of people missing.
The explosion happened on 116th Street and Park Avenue just after 9:30 a.m.
One of the buildings had a piano repair shop with apartments on top, while the other building housed a church, according to CBS.
Emergency responders are now concerned about neighboring buildings and their structural integrity, many people are wondering if buildings surrounding the area are at risk of collapse as well.
A New York City official said the casualty “numbers are going to change.”
The FBI was on the scene as a precautionary measure, but there is no indication of terror or crime, authorities said.
The media is reporting that this explosion was caused by a gas leak, but these reports are unconfirmed.
Many witnesses seem to think that this was caused by a train crashing.
“I thought a train had exploded,” said Marisa Aquino, who was at her apartment on 115th Street between Park and Lexington. “There are a ton of firefighters and a lot of smoke. Cops and first responders are everywhere.”
