View Full Version : Thinning Hair and Hemp Seed Oil

Hi All,

Since I've spent literally hours researching this subject, thought I should pass my thoughts and research on, to benefit others.

I have until recently had thick, silver, luscious locks. But in recent months I've noticed a big difference. Mainly due to hormones, menopause, aging etc.

And it happened so fast! It's a big shock.

Doesn't apply to women either. Men have the same problem - thinning hair at the temples and brittle, dry hair that is breaking. Gaah!

Well, I've done tons of research and I don't know if it's the holy grail yet. Time will tell. I have lots of links and won't bombard you all in this one post, but will add to it if anyone is interested.

First thing is ditch the hairspay! If you need to style with a hairdryer, get a hair salon heat protector spray (NOT FROM THE SUPERMARKET).

Secondly, up your protein intake - your hair is made of protein. (Eggs, meat) And hemp - more on that later.

Feed your scalp. Your scalp is like the gums for your teeth. Your teeth can be good but if the gums are in poor health, the teeth are not going to stay in the gums. Same with hair. If the scalp is dry and flacky, then the hair does not have a good spot to grow in, no oil on the scalp, the hair cannot grow - capiche?

Gotta get oil to the scalp - best oil is hemp seed oil, heat it up and apply to the scalp, and sleep with it overnight (put a towel on your pillows) and wash out in the morning. If your scalp is really dry, do this twice a week.

Treat from within as well - drink hemp powder in a smoothy every day. Protein is key.

These are the first steps for myself. I have heaps more info, so maybe more tomorrow when I have more time and if anyone is interested.

We keep a gallon of hemp oil in the fridge these days. It is the oil we use to cook with, and is quite delicious. My wife cooks the old fashioned way, with roux made in cast iron as a base for almost anything, and so that good ol' southern cuisine took a healthy turn. We also mix the hemp oil with apple cider vinegar and a little honey and salt and pepper, to make the best salad dressing, ever.

When you make brownies with it, the brownies smell "special", only without the usual side effects.

Oh, to be somehwat on topic the other way, we use Heritage Olive Oil Shampoo at the house, that was created according to the Edgar Cayce readings, and use Aura Glow, which combines olive, palm and sweet almond oils, to put on the hair and scalp in place of conditioner. The soaps from Heritage are pretty awesome too, and by all accounts, the name Aura Glow is derived by what the product actually does, which it makes sense that the right balance of oils applied to the hair and akin will promote electrical conductivity, hence a glowing aura. I will stop now, I should start a thread on the awesomeness of the Cayce remedies and the Heritage Products.

Hi PL,

Not detracting from what you are saying, but from my research, the hemp oil reduces it's strength when cooked at high temperatures to almost useless.

From what I've read it should always be in the fridge and not used for cooking. Although I have used it for cooking and it's yummy, but at high temps, it destroys the goodies.

It's a cold oil. It goes rancid very quickly.

But used on the scalp, you can heat it up in a bowl of hot water, then put the remainder in the fridge.

Ah, very true, for the full nutritional benefit it is best consumed raw, and left at room temperature it will go rancid.

But, in regards to cooking, it actually has the highest heat tolerance of any oil that can be cooked with, other oils will only take much lower temperatures before the fatty acids will break down into the nefarious trans fats. So, instead of saying how healthy it is to cook with, perhaps I should say it is a lot less unhealthy to cook with than any other oil.

Also, it seems really expensive to cook with, unless one can find it by the gallon, which in my experience is usually only two or three times the cost of the 24oz bottle.

IIRC, olive oil starts to break down a little over 200 degrees F, while the hemp goes close to 400.

Hemp is not to my taste although I will try and stick with it because of it's health properties. Will certainly whack it on my barnet (Barnet Fair for those unfamiliar with rhyming slang :)) and see whether the ol' syrup (syrup of figs) responds positively. I don't want to hijack the hemp oil but coconut has a good upcoming reputation, although I can't see to get hold of it anywhere. Any recommendations for that?

Hemp oil has a grassy taste and scent, which I quite like. But it's not for everyone.

Barnet Fair? Lol...you will have to explain that to this Ozzy...give us the good oil, in parlance that is...

The best product of hemp oil (and powder and seeds), comes from a farm about 20 minutes from where I live.

Can provide a link in a minute....

I have no financial or personal link to it whatsoever. (Just for the record.)

Back in a minute with the link.

Edit: OK, Barnet Fair = hair, (uh duh)

This is where I get my goodies - hemp oil, protein powder, seeds.

Just up the road in beautiful Bangalow, northern NSW, Australia.

Good old e bay has plenty of coconut oil.
Always search for 100% pure organic extra virgin coconut oil though to get the best quality.
My mrs made a hair conditioner using coconut oil and apple cider vinegar with great shiny results.

Yep Russ, I would like the recipe for that too!

Just an update, I gave my scalp a good irrigation with hemp seed oil last night, laid a towel over my pillows and horror of horrors - woke up to find a horde of ants on my towel. Holy Toledo! I was up and in the shower like a bat outta hell, what the? Either the ants liked the sweet grassy smell (NEVER had ants in my bed before and strangely enough they were not in my hair), or it was from the flowers from the moraya hedge I had put on my bedside table. Either way, it was ghastly....not a nice way to wake up on a Saturday morning.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that hemp seed oil has a large component of Vitamin D, which is good for use as a natural sunscreen, used topically on the skin before sunbathing.

Another helpful tip - you can make delicious hemp milk from hemp seeds. I plan on using this as my milk source from now on:

In a blender, add one tablespoon of hemp seeds for every 200ml of water. Seconds later, the soft little seeds burst into smooth, creamy, nourishing hemp milk. Use it as a replacement for normal milk - you never know what is in that supermarket milk anyway. Here is a healthier alternative.

Just some little nuggets for y'all....

Thought I should update this thread.

Been using hemp seed oil as a scalp treatment once a week (overnight), since I first posted this. In addition, I've been taking hemp protein powder in my daily smoothie.

As well, I've been using an organic scalp treatment twice a day. I also use a hemp shampoo and conditioner.

Well......ta da...I have half an inch of new hair growing on my temples! It really works. You just have to be disciplined with the protocol.

Do not use hairdryers. Do not use hairspray. At least until your hair has re-grown, then be very careful....if you must groom your hair for a special occasion, use a heat protective spray.

(Can't believe I'm writing all this while the world is going to hell in a hand-basket, but perhaps it keeps me sane, lol)

Hello ladies, I forgot about this thread.
If I remember correctly, you mix coconut oil with apple cider vinegar as your conditioner.
Leave it in your hair 15 mins or so and put up with the pungent vinegar aroma.
Afterwards, simply rinse out and dry as normal.
Personally ladies, I dont recommend you use a hair dryer because that will remove the all important moisture from your home made conditioner.
Good luck and may your hair shine as much as you.

Been using coconut oil as a conditioner for a while now and added a zinc and DE supplement a few months ago and am finally getting a new crop of fine gray hair around the edges. Not as thick as it was 50 years ago but better than just a year ago.
Thanks for all this wonderful info.
