I think it depends on what you are taking it for. Here is a protocol to raise your ph level which has been claimed to kill cancer cells. Some people claim you should avoid Arm & Hammer though. Hope this helps.

There is a controversy around the purity of the Arm & Hammer baking soda. Although it is not proven there is a chance that their soda contains aluminium. http://www.godlikeproductions.com/forum1/message2092758/pg4

Even if it is not true I am always cautious when I buy health supplements from the supermarkets and even Holland and Barrett.
Here what I've read about taking soda:

In continuous hyperacidity and in fermentative conditions a dose an hour before meals will tend to prepare the stomach for the next meal; or sometimes a dose will be necessary immediately after eating, because of abnormal acid or base having been present at the commencement of the meal. (For the average person one-half hour after meals is recommended).

dose at bedtime tends to check the early morning acidity, or a dose on arising cleans the stomach of acid and mucus before breakfast.

Whenever taking a bicarbonate solution internally the soda should be dissolved in cold water.

Here's the thing. It's an anti-acid. In other words it's alkaline... If we understood the balance our bodies requires between acid/alkaline in our diets, I believe we can cure just about anything. (If we really want to get well that is. I won't go into here the mind/body connection and how to look at how and if your illnesses is serving you.)

Back to acid/alkaline balance. Lots of good info on web (here's one: http://www.phmiracleliving.com/t-food-chart.aspx make sure you scroll all the way down)

It's all about the PH balance in the body. If you are out of balance, you will be out of sorts. If you are way out of balance, you will get sick. Those of us in the western world usually tend to have bodies that are too acidic due to our diets - refer to chart in website above. Also realize that ALL medications are acidic. So when you're popping a pill to get better, you're also throwing off your ph balance, which we make you sick. If you feel you must be on medication, then immediately take something (organic almonds are good) for an alkaline balance. If you tend to be a sugarholic (guilty as charged), as soon as you ingest sugar, balance with almonds or other alkaline food. Baking soda is a quick fix. It works. Just like anything else, you can overdose on it. Read instructions on box. Below are some doses.

Mix 1/2 tsp. baking soda in 16 oz. water and drink to relieve heartburn, acid reflux and GERD symptoms.

-- Mix 1/4 - 1/2 tsp. baking soda with 2 tbs. fresh lemon juice or organic apple cider vinegar to relieve acid reflux and create an alkaline-forming environment in your body. It will foam and fizz, so use a tall glass and wait for all bubbling to stop. Then add 8 oz. water and drink all at once. This mixture neutralizes the pH, buffers stomach acid and reduces acidosis.

When I was in massage school we did a test with the pH of our urine. All vegetarians had pH's at or above 7. The SAD (Standard Amer. Diet) eaters almost all registered 5.5.

It is my belief that much of joints wearing out and becoming bone on bone is caused by a lifetime of acidic blood and body fluids dissolving the thin layer of hyaline cartilage that provides a surface that allows for gliding when moist. Chronic hypo-hydration is also a huge factor. Think of cared for leather versus dried out, flaking off, kind of leather and one can see how important hydration is for joints. And many other processes.

I do not have a box of arm and hammer baking soda to look at but, it probably contains the same anti-caking agent most commercial table salts contain. Alumina-silicate. Something that ends up in all standard food preparations.

There are better ways to alkalize your system than taking baking soda, unless you suffer from acidosis of some kind, in which case it may be best.

Just be careful that you use Sodium Bicarbonate and not baking powder. The name "baking soda" is ambiguous for this reason. Baking powder is a combination of sodium bicarbonate and a food acid that effervesces to produce carbon dioxide as a chemical raising agent.
