Folk music is where the soul of a culture can be found. Free of copywright and part of the fabric of a people. Their stories carried in verse and melody. Best seen live. Music was meant to be a performance art to be shared. The people coming together.

Earbuds and personal music has created isolation in ways that do not benefit a society. However, given much modern music, earbuds are also a gift of sanity.:p

Our present day music has probably all grown out of this one particular genre. The blues is an obvious offshoot, as is jazz and rock n roll. Not too sure about metal though - those darn reptiles again . . . :)

Depends on how far you push your retrospective barrier though surely? Music is organised vibration which arguably begun everything....the rest is divisive labels :-)
