LONG-RANGE weather forecasters warned tonight that Britain should prepare for heavy and persistent snow for up to THREE MONTHS with winter 2013 set to be the worst in more than 60 years.

The latest detailed forecasts for winter 2013 ALL point to months of relentless extreme cold with heavy snow likely across the country.

Arctic air will roar in from the North Pole later this week, triggering the start of the worst winter in many people's lifetimes.

Experts in long-range weather forecasting said the WHOLE of Britain should be prepared for this winter to be the most severe since 1947, which saw the UK hit by relentless snow and some of the lowest temperatures on record.

Be prepared, store tinned & packet food, get a gas twin ring camping stove & a big bottle of gas (not the camping gaz stuff its very expensive), think ahead for things that will not be available when the snow hits, like snow chains for your car.

If you depend on your car make sure that it has newish antifreeze in the radiator (it degrades after a few years) a battery that is not on its last legs, snow chains, & things in the boot such as walking boots/ wellies, a big coat, something to eat & drink, a spade, torch, jump leads, & a tow strap. A sleeping bag if you have to use motorways might be a life saver too.

Even though i agree with most of the above and the weather is getting worse LONG-RANGE weather forecasters have been known to be wrong on many occasions. That's why most of them don't even predict more than a week in advance now because of how many times they have predicted wrongly even with the technology they use.

I hope the above does not happen but it wont surprise me if it did

Well, here down under, were I live, (sub-tropical) we've had wild storms for the last 4 nights. Not damaging storms, quite nice ones, lol, if you like storms.

Summer here of course now. But I do feel for those of you up there that have fierce winters. I have lived in London twice - bloody ice on the car windows and all that. Nothing like that here. Thank god.

However we have the other extremes, like bushfires, extreme heat and humidity, cyclones.

Hope you all prepare and make sure you can survive the winter season.

Is this because the Gulf Stream, which becomes the North Atlantic drift hasn't kicked in since the BP Gulf disaster? I know it stopped flowing after the disaster (which it occasionally does) and naturally "experts" said this stop had nothing to do with the oil disaster and all the corexit they pumped into the Gulf.

What I don't know is if it ever started again. Based on the extreme winters both the East coast of US have been having as well as UK and N.Europe, I'm guessing it hasn't, but can't find any info on current status. It turns out there is a rock group called North Atlantic Drift and I keep getting info on them!

Explanation of North Atlantic Drift: It is a powerful warm ocean current that continues the Gulf Stream northeast. West of Continental Europe it splits into two major branches. One branch goes southeast, later to become the Canary Current as it passes northwest Africa and turns southwest. The other major branch continues north along the coast of northwestern Europe. It is thought to have a considerable warming influence on the climate, The relatively warm waters of the North Atlantic Drift are responsible for moderating the climate of western Europe, so that winters are less cold than would otherwise be expected at its latitude. Without the warm North Atlantic Drift, the UK and other places in Europe would be as cold as Canada, at the same latitude. For example, without this steady stream of warmth the British Isles winters are estimated to be more than 5 °C cooler, bringing the average December temperature in London to about 2°C.......

Its only snow, better than 40 degree, global warming, "rapture" style heatwaves...easier to warm up than cool down. Well, if people aren't idiots and switch from any one of the big 6 energy gangsters it should be easier. I advise OVO energy, should Malc wish to remove this post just know you may have killed some pensioners by doing so.

The UK is in a panic and grinds to a halt with just a few days snow.It like omg cant get to work trains, planes and everything else stops . If we get this, and I do mean IF then we will be screwed. We don't have enough grit for the roads most years. And the councils never seem to learn. Our winters are getting colder yet they still don't prepare enough by planning ahead.

Reminds me of waking up, started by looking at the BP oil spill and
the effect it would have on Europe in the wintertime back in 2010 :)

And choosing my online name Black Panther, for short BP ;)

It will be difficult to hide as a Black Panther in the snow :ninja:

This is not a natural event occuring. The whole climate change being warmer is to distract us from the worsening natural cooling that is taking place, another cabal crime they will pay for. They aren't responsibile for the cooling that is happening, as it is a genuinely natural process. The dark here are trying to use these means to kill us off, however, we are more adept at dealing with these extremes than we are credited with at being.

This sounds like a load more fear porn to me. What they are promising is a part of the natural cycle in this part of the world. Look out everyone we can expect Winter, well what a surprise! It happens every year, some years granted worse than others but still just one of the natural seasons - I hear this might be followed by a thaw and regrowth, in my day we just called it Spring ... tongue in cheek! Perhaps ...

Some climate scientists are calling for a "mini ice age" (at least some not on the cabal payroll).

If there is truth to the "transatlantic current" being shut down (due likely to the gulf oil spill) then UK would be effected sooner and more severely than the rest of the world.

Well ok, it is a bit fear pornesque, but there is no harm in prepping for winter, and if the Gulf Stream is packing in things could get very cold in common with other countries at the same latitude, such as Canada.

Strange weather worldwide, I think. This was on the David Icke web page today . . . . Perhaps we should have a weather channel so that we can monitor the world's weather, especially if one of the poles is melting and the other pole is freezing . . .

Sorta noticed over the years that if the countries along the equator start receiving a pounding , say floods, typhoons ect , that means a lot of really hot rising winds, so much so its like a rush of turbulence of hot air pockets crashing and racing up high then drawn towards the north pole (northern hemisphere cycle) that means a huge amount of hot air reaching the pole, freezing racing down at low levels due to its new density that will be racing towards the equator once again.
Its the natural cycle of things, so to be able to predict a severe harsh weather for the U.K. they predicting the harsh Atlantic winds from the north or perhaps Siberian winds freezing most of Europe. As this cannot happen without the start of the cycle in the tropics. The main tropic disaster at the moment is of course the Philippines.

I don't believe in global warming but it's really warm here in the north of Italy - much too warm for November. I'm up near the Alps and we've had snow up on the mountains some days when it's rained down here but we're getting weather from 9 to 17 degrees centigrade (62.6 degrees fahrenheit) at the moment! It's usually similar to the south of England here during the winter.

As usual the "scientists" are failing to take the obvious into account, magma being released under ice will create huge volumes of steam, which occupies about 16 times the volume of water (if my memory serves me correctly).

So the heat (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20130604012404AA9MnqO) could be the driver of a massive explosion, the force of the eruption is neither here or there, and explosions all require a form of containment....

Indonesia’s Sinabung volcano erupts again, displacing 19,000

January 1, 2014 – INDONESIA – More than 19,000 people have been displaced by a volcano in Indonesia that has been erupting for months and shot lava into the air nine times overnight. Mount Sinabung on Sumatra sent hot rocks and ash 7,000 meters in the air last night and this morning, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. “Mount Sinabung remains on the highest alert level and we have warned there should be no human activity within a five-kilometer radius of the crater,” Mr Nugroho said. “On Monday night, 19,126 people had fled their homes, and we expect that number to rise.” Police and soldiers were patrolling the danger zone to evacuate people who have chosen to stay in their homes, Mr. Nugroho added. Mount Sinabung – one of dozens of active volcanoes in Indonesia which straddles major tectonic fault lines – erupted in September for the first time since 2010 and has been rumbling ever since. In August, five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a volcano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted. The country’s most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in 2010. –

Well, heres some extreme weather stuff !

Fierce storms tore through flood defences and ripped apart age-old cliffs as Britain endured another day of dramatic weather.

Hundreds of homes were flooded as the worst storms in 20 years continued to cause misery across the country, and a flood siren warning of extreme danger to people was sounded in Dorset as tidal surges and storms batter the coast.

A landmark rock arch that has stood for centuries above Porthcothan Bay in Cornwall was reduced to rubble by towering waves and 70mph winds.

Porthcothan Bay is famed for its picture-postcard beach and caves - but its massive stone archway has now collapsed into the sea.

The towering outcrop once resembled a giant rocky doughnut. Now, though, it looks like someone has taken a huge bite out of it.

Floods hit South Philippines; 20 Dead, 13 missing, thousands displaced.

http://static.rappler.com/images/landslide-davao-oriental-epa-20140113-003.jpg

January 14, 2014 – PHILIPPINES – Two days of heavy rains set off floods and landslides in the southeastern Philippines, leaving at least 20 people dead, 13 missing and thousands displaced, officials said Monday. Most of the dead and missing came from floods and landslides that hit Compostella Valley and Davao Oriental provinces, said Maj. Reynaldo Balido, spokesman for the disaster-response agency. A landslide Monday damaged five houses in Cagdianao municipality in Dinagat Island, off the northeastern coast of the main southern island of Mindanao, killing six residents including two boys aged 2 and 14, said police officer Elbert Ompoc. Another man drowned in Agusan del Sur province’s Prosperidad Township, on Mindanao, and seven others were missing, according to the civil defense regional bureau. The flooding, triggered by rains from a low pressure area, has affected 132,000 people from 10 provinces. Liza Mazo, a regional disaster-response official, said some 10,000 people fled to safer grounds in four provinces and an island. The same area was hit by a typhoon in December 2012, leaving nearly 2,000 people dead and missing and causing massive destruction. Government weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said rains may persist until Tuesday or Wednesday over central provinces, including those hit by Typhoon Haiyan, which killed more than 6,100 people and left nearly 1,800 others missing on Nov. 8. –ABC News

The sea froze so fast that it killed thousands of fish instantly

January 14, 2014 – NORWAY - Norwegian public radio (Google-translated) reports on the instant dead of thousands of fish in a bay in the island of Lovund, Norway. An air temperature of -7.8 C (17.96 F) combined with a strong east wind froze the sea water instantly, trapping and killing the fish you can see in this fishapocalyptic image: The dog owner says that he has never seen such a phenomenon. NRK claims that the herrings were chased by cormorants into the bay when the deadly freezing happened. Aril Slotte—the head of pelagic fish department at Norway’s Institute of Marine Research—says it is not uncommon for herring to get very near the shore when chased by predators, sometimes getting trapped by the low tide in areas like this bay. –Sploid

30,000 displaced by deadly floods in Indonesian capital

http://images.gmanews.tv/v3/webpics/v3/2014/01/640_2014_01_20_08_56_53.jpg

More than 30,000 Indonesians have fled their homes in the capital due to flooding that has left five dead, officials said Sunday, with people using rubber dinghies and wading through waist-deep water to reach safer ground. Many parts of Jakarta were under murky, brown water after days of torrential rain produced the city’s first significant floods of the months-long rainy season. Buildings in some parts of the sprawling capital, which has a population of more than 10 million and is regularly afflicted by floods, were half submerged, with roads unpassable in many areas. “Yesterday the water was knee deep in my house,” Yulian Candra, who lives in west Jakarta, told news website Detik. “There has also been a power cut for the past two days.” The number of those forced to leave their homes jumped from less than 5,000 on Saturday to more than 30,000 on Sunday after heavy rain deluged Jakarta overnight. People waded through the floods clutching their belongings. Others used boats to make their way to evacuation centers, which are mainly housed in mosques in the Muslim-majority country, but also in government buildings and tents erected on the roadside. Some motorcyclists, cyclists and cars ventured out despite the weather, spraying up water as they drove along roads where the floods were not yet too high. The flooding was widespread across Jakarta, with the highest number of displaced in the south and west of the city and floodwaters reaching up to three meters (10 feet) in some places. Five people have so far been killed in the past week due to flooding, disaster agency official Tri Budiarto said, adding that those killed had either died by drowning or being electrocuted.

State of emergency declared after 6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Greek Island

January 27, 2014 – GREECE – Schools were ordered closed and a state of emergency was declared on the Greek island of Kefalonia on Monday after an earthquake damaged homes and injured at least seven people. Hundreds of the island’s residents slept in their cars after a magnitude 5.8 temblor struck near the town of Lixouri on the western Greek island on Sunday, and was followed by dozens of aftershocks as powerful as magnitude 5.2, according to the Institute of Geodynamics in Athens. Seismologists noted it was too soon to tell whether the Sunday temblor, which the U.S. Geological Survey listed as having a 6.1 magnitude, was the main earthquake or whether a stronger one might strike in the following days. “We need 48 hours to say with 99 percent certainty that this was the main quake,” Thanassis Ganas, head of research at the Athens Geodynamic Institute, said on Skai television. He added, however, that the aftermath of Sunday’s temblor appeared to be developing smoothly, and that the multiple aftershocks were normal and expected.

Kefalonia and nearby Zakinthos and Ithaki were devastated by massive earthquakes in 1953, when a 7.2 magnitude quake struck three days after a 6.4 temblor, leveling nearly all the buildings on the islands, killing hundreds of people and injuring thousands. Buildings constructed in the area since then have been constructed to strict anti-seismic specifications. Ganas said the quakes on Sunday and Monday were not created by the same fault as those of 1953. Local officials said two ferries were on the way to the island Monday to provide accommodation for residents whose homes were damaged. “There is damage but thankfully the island withstood” the quake, said Interior Minister Yannis Mihelakis, who arrived on the island shortly after the quake to review damage. Rockslides left some roads on the island shut and many homes and stores have suffered cracks and broken windows. Earthquakes are common throughout Greece, but the vast majority are small and cause no injuries or damage. –ABC

Wrath and fury of Sinabung turns regions of Indonesia into wasteland

January 28, 2014 – INDONESIA – This stunning time lapse footage shows the eruption of Mount Sinabung on Sumatra Island, northwest Indonesia in recent weeks. While the images may look impressive, the active volcano has cause havoc in the region with over 25,000 people evacuated from the danger area since the active flows began last September and authorities raised the alert status to the highest level in November. The volcano, which became active in 2010 having lain dormant since the 15th century, has erupted hundreds of times since the latest activity began, sending volcanic debris as high as 4,000m into the air. This video shows the devastation wrought on a nearby village by the tons of ash descending from the air.

A family in northern Italy have a lucky escape after four thousand cubic metres of rock were sent hurtling down a cliff face and crashing through their farmyard

A 300-year-old stone barn was flattened and farm vehicles and machinery destroyed when several giant boulders hurtled down a hillside in northern Italy last week.

Footage filmed from a radio controlled quadcopter shows the aftermath of the incident in Tramin, South Tyrol.
The path of the giant rocks through the surrounding vinyard can be clearly seen, as well as the ruins of the barn.

Indredibly, one of the enormous rocks came to a stop just a couple of feet from the main house and no-one was injured in the incident
Herbert Trebo, the owner of the farm, told local journalists the rockfall, which happened shortly after 8pm on January 21, "sounded as if a train had thundered through the living room."
The family has been evacuated while authorities decide how to remove the rocks.

6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes off western Greece, hits island of Cephalonia - 2nd big quake in a week.

February 3, 2014 – GREECE – A strong 6.1 magnitude earthquake rattled the island of Cephalonia in western Greece early on Monday, the second tremor of this scale to hit the region in just over a week. Τhere were no immediate reports of casualties. The tremor measured 5.7 in magnitude and struck at 0308 GMT, according to the Athens Geodynamic Institute. The United States Geological Survey said the magnitude was 6.1. Last week, a quake measuring 5.8 rocked the island, sending panicked residents fleeing from their homes and damaging some buildings. “All evidence shows that this was the strongest quake to follow the main one, which struck last week,” a senior official at the institute told Greek Skai TV. –Reuters

Severe weather in Cornwall continues to cause havoc in Cornwall, many coastal properties are damaged, schools are closed and everything seems paralyzed there. I hope our friends TOTers John Parslow and Tribe are save and well. If you can tell us some first hand information would be nice, it looks really scary there from the MSM pictures.

Storm batters Cornwall.

Two severe flood warnings, meaning an imminent danger to life, have been issued for communities on the Somerset Levels.

The highest level of alert was issued by the Environment Agency for the A361, between East Lyng and Burrowbridge and the second for Saltmoor and North Moor.

Residents of Fordgate, North Moor and Moorland are being advised to leave their homes as the River Tone spilled into Currymoor reservoir.

The council said up to 150 properties could be affected....

High tide at Porthleven brought waves crashing voer the sea wall and four boats belonging to local fishermen are reported to have sunk under the deluge.

At Plymouth, police have closed Plymouth Hoe due to safety concerns.

Meanwhile some structures near the waterside are said to have collapsed.

Witnesses have likened the scene of destruction to a war zone.

Debris is strewn on the road and at least one business premises is said to have been destroyed by the elements.

As dawn broke, parts of the Westcountry woke up to scenes of devastation after a powerful storm ripped through the region.

Travel is widely disrupted across Devon and Cornwall in the aftermath of a battering by powerful winds and rain.

Dozens of trees are reported as having been felled in the region, making some roads impassable.

The King Harry Ferry in Cornwall will begin sailing at 10.40am.

The Torpoint Ferry is now operating with all three boats.

The Tamar Bridge has been closed to high sided vehicles and motorbikes.

The Saltash tunnel has now reopened after a closure forced by debris.

Tribe, that wall of 75 foot water is awesome and it's strange there isn't more discussion as to the cause.

I'm sure there would have been ships at sea and for-warnings, although the article reads it's the start of more to come. The destruction of the sea wall and railroad is terrible. My prayers for your safety in these turbulent times.

Britain grapples through worst torrential rainfall in 248 years
Posted on February 7, 2014

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2014/02/06/article-2552852-1B3F78C600000578-925_964x658.jpg

LONDON - Britain announced emergency funding Thursday to cope with devastating floods after what officials said had been likely the worst spell of winter rainfall in at least 248 years. Prime Minister David Cameron’s government has faced criticism for its handling of a crisis that has left swathes of the country under water, with a key railway line washed away. Several people had to be rescued from deluged homes on Thursday while more storms are expected this weekend. Across the English Channel, France’s western tip was placed on alert for flooding as high tides wreaked havoc along Europe’s Atlantic coast. Pickles said the winter was the “wettest since George III was on the throne,” referring to Britain’s monarch from 1760-1820. He added that flood victims have “literally been through hell and high water.” Britain’s Meterological Office released figures confirming Pickles’ assessment. For southern England, “regional statistics suggest that this is one of, if not the most, exceptional periods of winter rainfall in at least 248 years,” it said in a statement. Parts of the region received five months of rainfall between December 12 and January 31. The rainy winter has set records tumbling, being the wettest combined period of December and January across the United Kingdom since 1910, the Met Office said. It was also the windiest December since 1969, based on the occurrence of winds over 69 mph. For England alone it was the wettest December to January since 1876-1877 and the second wettest since rainfall records began in 1766.

Firefighters in Somerset and the neighboring county of Devon rescued 14 people from homes and stranded vehicles late Wednesday and early Thursday. Rescuers in inflatable boats rescued four adults and three children from one house after a river burst its banks in Stoke St Gregory, a village that heir to the throne Prince Charles visited on Tuesday, a fire brigade spokesman said. Prince Charles himself said on his trip to the region that the ‘tragedy is that nothing happened for so long.” Cameron personally took charge of the government’s response on Wednesday after facing a growing tide of criticism for being too slow to aid stricken communities. But the damage has kept coming, with the main train service connecting Devon and the county of Cornwall with the rest of Britain being suspended after part of the sea wall under the coastal railway line collapsed. Meanwhile in France, Finestere, a department of Brittany which juts out into the Atlantic, was placed on red flooding alert and braced for two of its rivers, the Morlaix and the Laita, to burst their banks as a result of heavy rain forecast for Thursday. The highest-level warning was issued by Meteo-France shortly after the agency placed 29 departments from Brittany to the Paris region on a second-tier orange alert. Recent days have seen huge waves; gale-force winds and torrential rains combine to batter sea defenses from the Basque country on France’s border with Spain. The storms sent a Spanish cargo ship crashing into a sea wall at the French port of Bayonne on Wednesday, splitting it clean in two. –Space Daily

Volcano in Ecuador causing crop shortage, rising prices

http://resources3.news.com.au/images/2012/09/30/1226484/593407-ecuador-volcano-tungurahua-eruption.jpg
February 11, 2014 – ECUADOR - After a week of eruptions, the Tungurahua volcano in Ecuador has damaged thousands of hectares of crops, leaving a feed shortage for 110,000 head of livestock. The volcano erupted on Feb. 2, sending an ash plume about 13 km high, followed by two other moderate-sized explosions that sent ash about five kilometers into the sky. Since then, the volcano has continued to erupt. The thick ash is coating crops and monsoon winds are causing the ash to spread around the countryside widely. In order to minimize the losses incurred by the volcano’s eruption, farmers have begun to harvest tomatoes, potatoes and corns before they reach maturity. According to local media reports, the spreading volcanic ash has led to vegetable shortages in some large and medium-sized cities in the country. In Guayaquil, the biggest city in Ecuador, prices for onions, corn and potato have risen for about 10 per cent, the report said. The Ecuadorian Geophysical Institute said that the volcanic activity is letting up gradually. Tungurahua is one of South America’s most active volcanoes. –Global News

Southeast usa about to get smacked with a severe ice storm. Remember a couple weeks all the problems only a couple inches of snow caused Atlanta???

... well if this plays out as predicted it will be *dramatically* worse as due to the southern climate they are suggesting a *massive* ice storm.

Much worse than snow.

It is heavy and accumlates on electrical wires as well as all the trees breaking off many many branches falling onto homes, roads and yes margaret ... electrical lines.

If it comes to fruition (if) there could be literally millions of people without electricity for who knows how long???

In the parts of the country that get things like this on a seasonal basis it is sort of a natural thinning kind of thing (like forest fires) taking out the old and weakening branches. Deep south ... to have some heavy ice on trees that are not used to it???

Anyway ... no wish to cause fear but putting out the word (many in usa are now aware).

Interesting on the CNN vid (included) the guy suggested "armageddon" ... which in these days of weather wars may not be too far from the truth???

Sinkhole swallows pricey Corvettes at hallowed museum

By Thom Patterson, CNN

(CNN) -- Sinkholes are swallowing Corvettes now. Last year it was houses in Florida, and on Wednesday nature gobbled up some of the coolest and fastest cars to come off the assembly line.

Eight valuable 'vettes at Bowling Green, Kentucky's National Corvette Museum fell victim to a 40-foot-wide, 20-foot-deep sinkhole that opened up in the facility's yellow Sky Dome wing. The museum unofficially estimates it caused millions of dollars in damage.

Mount Kelud erupts in Indonesia, killing 3 – forcing the evacuation of 100,000

This picture says it all - so much ash, it looks like snow on the ground, can't imagine what it's like to breathe in that stuff.

February 14, 2014 – INDONESIA – A volcano eruption in Indonesia killed three people and forced tens of thousands more out of their homes, the disaster management agency said Friday. Two died from smoke inhalation while the third was hit by a collapsing wall. Officials had originally reported two deaths due to falling building debris. Mount Kelud in the eastern part of the main island Java has been spewing ash for at least two days high into the air, as a smoke plume has risen from out of its crater into the sky. The government raised its eruption alert to its highest level overnight, and authorities have ordered an evacuation of all residents in a 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) radius of the volcano in eastern Java. At the height of the crisis Friday, 100,000 people evacuated, but that number later dropped to more than 75,000. Seven airports closed due to volcanic ash, which filled the skies and can lead to jet engine problems.

Huge storms in Sydney today - 2 in fact.

I am not in Sydney, but one big ******* is about to hit here very shortly. If you look on the radar map at the bottom - see where Lismore is, that's around where I am. Just coming in now.
I can sense destruction and big hail.

It's been so hot and humid, so now nature is going to do a cleanse. Probably the electricity will go off. (And the internet of course). Hopefully my dinner will be ready before that happens!

Edit: I don't like the look of those red bits coming straight at me on that storm tracker map. Just started to rain and it's gone black in a matter of minutes. Thunder rolling in. Oh well, rissoles by candlelight I guess?

Thanks Altaira, all good here...the storm skirted around my area. Often happens. Sometimes serious clouds move in and I get a call from friends in the next suburb to ask if I'm alright. I say what are you talking about? Then I go to their place about 5 minutes away and find huge trees uprooted - the roots the size of a car - and houses demolished from falling trees, but nothing happens where I live just 5 minutes away, bizarro.

It's all good here.

Costa Rica’s Turrialba Volcano – shaken by violent eruption

http://theextinctionprotocol.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/f25a0-volcano.jpg?w=612&h=408

COSTA RICA - Among the observations by volcanologists conducting weekend inspections in the area around Costa Rica’s Turrialba Volcano were craters in the earth measuring up to one meter in diameter – the result of rocks shooting out from the volcano. Experts from the National Seismological Network (RSN) and the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) conducted the inspections in light of significant activity at the volcano that started last week. RSN volcanologist Gino González Ilama said the areas of impact are located on the south side of the volcano and cover 80 percent of the slope up to 400 meters from the volcano’s crater. “We observed the impact of volcanic rock that had caused several craters on the ground. We believe the rocks were shot out of the volcano at speeds greater than 100 kilometers per hour, and this proves there is strong activity inside,” González said.

Expelled ash again reached several areas north of San José, located 60 kilometers southwest of the volcano, and several areas in the provinces of Alajuela, Heredia and Limón. According to the RSN, it was the first time ash had appeared in Limón, falling on the city of Guápiles. “The Turrialba Volcano is very active,” González said. “The hole formed after the first explosion has grown and is about 150 meters long and 100 meters wide. It’s getting bigger, and the volcano’s walls continue collapsing because explosions of gas, ash and rock are constant. We also found small amounts of lava.” Volcanologists on Sunday reported two types of eruptions taking place: phreatic – which entails gases, mud and ash – and strombolian – which contains magma and ash. Turrialba Volcano showed signs of activity in 2010 with phreatic explosions. According to OVSICORI, magma hasn’t been expelled from the volcano since 1866. –Tico Times

New Maps of California's Water Shortage Are Absolutely Shocking!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqIMOnLw71c

The maps come from a new paper in Nature Climate Change by NASA water scientist James Famiglietti. "California's Sacramento and San Joaquin river basins have lost roughly 15 cubic kilometers of total water per year since 2011," he writes. That's "more water than all 38 million Californians use for domestic and municipal supplies annually—over half of which is due to groundwater pumping in the Central Valley."

Famiglietti uses satellite data to measure how much water people are sucking out of the globe's aquifers, and summarized his research in his new paper.

More than 2 billion people rely on water pumped from aquifers as their primary water source, Famiglietti writes. Known as groundwater (as opposed to surface water, the stuff that settles in lakes and flows in streams and rivers), it's also the source of at least half the irrigation water we rely on to grow our food. When drought hits, of course, farmers rely on groundwater even more, because less rain and snow means less water flowing above ground.

The lesson Famiglietti draws from satellite data is chilling: "Groundwater is being pumped at far greater rates than it can be naturally replenished, so that many of the largest aquifers on most continents are being mined, their precious contents never to be returned."

The Central Valley boasts some of the globe's fastest-depleting aquifers—but by no means the fastest overall. Indeed, it has a rival here in the United States. The below graphic represents depletion rates at some of the globe's largest aquifers, nearly all of which Famiglietti notes, "underlie the world's great agricultural regions and are primarily responsible for their high productivity."
