The San Francisco Bay barge stirs speculation about whether it could be a data storage centre or a Google Glass shop

The mystery surrounding a four-storey structure being built by Google in the heart of the San Francisco Bay is generating rumours and worries.

The company has not said what the structure is, San Francisco's mayor says he does not know what it is, and government inspectors are sworn to secrecy.

At least one Coast Guard employee has had to sign a non-disclosure agreement with the internet giant, US Coast Guard spokesman Barry Bena told Reuters.

Moored in the shadow of the Bay Bridge off Treasure Island, a former military base, the nondescript barge is built with four levels of white shipping containers, and sprouts what appear to be antennas on top.

The hulking structure, half shrouded in scaffolding, has stirred intense speculation in the Bay Area since reports of its existence surfaced late last month.

Some speculate it is a store to sell Google's internet-connected glasses, while others believe it is a data storage centre.

Some reports have suggested it is meant to be a giant showroom for wealthy clients and VIPs, equipped with amenities such as a bar.

The structure is raising some environmental concerns

Deb Self, executive director of the environmental group Baykeeper, said: "At some point they're going to have to unveil what it is they're doing, and it will be sad if they have put a lot of money into something that is simply not allowable in the bay.

"We don't really want to see the bay used as a shopping mall. Unacceptable," she told the AP news agency.

Environmentalists warn that water-cooled data centres might warm the sea and harm marine life.

Google has been tight-lipped about its project, but the internet giant appears to be acting legally.

By constructing a vessel, not a building, it can conceal its purpose because it does not need permits from San Francisco, a city with copious inspection and paperwork requirements for builders.

Adding to the mystery, a second similar barge was recently spotted in Portland, Maine.

Which suggests that whatever it is, they want to be able to reach the entire continental United States ... ?

A shopping mall for the rich!?!?!?.. . I doubt it. I would think the rich wouldn't be enticed into a closed in unattractive place - they go for luxurious.

More likely storage. I lived in the Bay Area for 20 years. The environmentalists there are like pit-bulls. I can't imagine they'll let this be shoved under the carpet. I'm actually surprised that it was built without a firestorm. Although, now that I think about it, they we're rebuilding the Bay Bridge for a long time and that was a huge fiasco - and immediately after that BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) went on struck. All of this created a terrible commute problem for quite a while. I'm guessing all eyes were focused on those problems - good time to sneak in something like that, eh!

Personally, I think it's a government project. The public would be too cranked up if they knew the gubbermint was responsible, therefore, disclosing Google is building it (without providing any proof)...mere deflection.

If it really was Google's...the politicians above the mayor...and below him would be heavily bribed and greased thoroughly West Coast and East Coast.....plus there are a total of 3 facilities like this - one in Portland, Maine & hush hush where the 3rd is.

Tip-off --- Take note of the word "appears" below. Nothing is true.

When a media article is published with no author's individual name/s --- it's propaganda bull**** designed to deflect and misinform.

The mystery surrounding a four-storey structure being built by Google in the heart of the San Francisco Bay is generating rumours and worries.

This is the biggest crock I've ever read. Never, is one or two singled out. The whole CG "unit" would be forced to sign "disclosures" all the way up to "Group". The CG is now under "Homeland Security". Baby George and Dirty Dick's Patriot Act changed the US Coast Guard from the Department of Transportation and shoved it under Homeland Security.

Not only is the published article above a "cover-up", this one from the Military is as well:

Plus this one from Reuters, Cabal owned.

Whatever the outcome, you can be sure this is a covert cabal blackops gubbermint project with HS involved. If you keep reading below about the Coast Guard just doesn't know...the exterior barge was built in New London, Connecticut....Headquarters of THE US COAST GUARD ACADEMY:flag:

If that wasn't enough to establish that the two are related, it's also clear that both were built on barges owned by the same company. The one in San Francisco Bay was built on top of a barge with the registration "BAL 0010," while the one in Portland harbor is on a barge with the registration "BAL 0011." According to online documents, both are owned by By and Large, LLC. That company, which has a miniscule online profile, is also the current tenant in Hangar 3, an immense building alongside the pier where the San Francisco Bay project is under construction.

Even workers on the project aren’t being told about the structure’s purpose or the identity of its owner. That’s known by only a few Cianbro executives, said Peter Vigue, chairman and CEO of Cianbro. The company has signed a nondisclosure agreement with its customer, which has made secrecy a priority, he said.

“We are absolutely forbidden to discuss it in any way or in any detail,” Vigue said.

The Coast Guard doesn’t know what it is, said a staffer at the base in South Portland. The Portland Harbor Commission hasn’t been told, either.

So far, no one has figured it out, said Tom Dobbins, chairman of the commission.

“Curiosity has gotten to me,” he said. “I’ve got my spies out, but they aren’t doing anything for me.”

The structure’s exterior was built in New London, Conn. Its final destination could be anywhere the barge can carry it.

If this isn't part of some marketing scheme and is something more sinister then they could be some kind of Command & Control centers for if/when the grid shuts down as they are not hard wired into the grid.

After months of speculation Google has issued a statement which confirmes what many had suspected, that the mystery barge would serve as a floating showroom for upcoming products like the company's Google Glass connected eyewear.

The barges are also an effort by Google to compete with rival Apple's stylized retail stores for consumer attention, a source told KPIX-TV in San Francisco.

Everyone who believes this, please raise your right hand - and no fingers crossed. Now, not saying they might have to use a floor or two as a disguise showroom, but I doubt it's the real purpose.

Thanks BabaRa for the UPI article. I'm sure you noticed in their huge hierarchy, they now have robots writing articles. Take note - there is no human signature with the guts to pen their name to it...so it's a lie.

I believe you and Spiral nailed it.
Command & Control centers

Google and Gubbermint have been in bed together from the start....just like the little turd at Facebook.

Facebook saved spies trillions of manpower hours/money researching their targets to learn "who are/were" friends/connections to the target in the past. And then the cabal came up with the idea of offering free facebook for the sheep.

There will always be free cheese in the mouse trap. The cabal knows some people will always be suckers for freebies that haven't learned how to think/act for themselves.

It just seems like an easy target for command centers . even if they are to be in use for u.s. territory only . just one hand held land launch missile could do some serious damage .An under ground facility would be much more affective and secure. And we know they exist.
Just my op,but the barges still dont make any sense to me.
