This is interesting (if retrospective) interview with Christopher Hitchens in 1999. What stands out imo is the interviewer's inability to see or agree with anything negative about the (then) President of the United States. This is a failing of human nature per se imo. If, for instance, you tell somebody that so-and-so did something awful to you, nine times out of ten they will say something like, "Well, he's always been OK to me . . ." and that's the end of it. It's an inability to make a judgement because of how that person is perceived, rather than what they've done. This can cover both serious accusations and not so serious . . . .

Oh yeah, "He's always been OK to me." That could be said about all kinds of terrible characters. And also run-of-the-mill criminals. I've heard that more times than I'd care to recall.

(people said that about Charlie, kind of ironic now)
