A raven's memories are for the future
by: Markus Boeckle, Nicola S. Clayton
14 Jul 2017

The human brain stores memories of past events to guide decision-making about current and future events. Researchers long assumed that animals do not use memories in this way but rather exist in a constant stream of present needs, unable to plan for the future (1). Studies on nonhuman primates and corvids challenge this view and show that some species can plan for the future at least as well as 4-year old children (2, 3). These results suggest that planning for the future is not uniquely human and evolved independently in distantly related species to address common problems (4). On page 202 of this issue, Kabadayi and Osvath (5) show that ravens anticipate the nature, time, and location of a future event based on previous experiences. The ravens' behavior is not merely prospective, anticipating future states (6); rather, they flexibly apply future planning in behaviors not typically seen in the wild.

Although some corvids make and use tools as part of their ecological predisposition, ravens are considered a non-tool-using corvid and are not known for trading items for food. However, they are known to cache food in nature and can use tools in experiments (see the photos). In their study, Kabadayi and Osvath test ravens' abilities to plan for future tool use and trading, rather than for food caching (a behavior that might be considered as an adaptive specialization to gather food in order to eat it at a future date). They thus provide compelling evidence against the argument that future planning in corvids is a cognitive ability that can only be used during food caching or some other specific evolutionarily selected adaptation. The study provides evidence that future planning can flexibly serve different behaviors not only in humans but also in nonhuman animals.

The authors presented five ravens with a choice of objects. Only one of these objects was a functional tool, which could be used to retrieve food from a puzzle box. The ravens chose correctly not only when they were offered the box but also when they had to store the tool and plan for the next day. In another experiment, the ravens were trained to exchange tokens for food. When the ravens knew that trading would only happen on the next day, they chose and stored these tokens as soon as they were offered to them. By manipulating tool choice, time, and trading opportunities, the authors controlled the value of the items at choice in relation to current as well as future interactions.

The results from the two experiments show that ravens take temporal distance between item choice and reward into account, exercise self-control, and make decisions for predicted futures rather than arbitrary ones. Thus, the birds opt for a more distant but higher gratification rather than an immediate but lower gratification and do so flexibly across behaviors.

What are the selective pressures that led to complex cognition and enabled future planning to evolve? The answer to this question may be best understood by investigating convergent evolution among distantly related species such as corvids and primates (4). In the 1990s, scientists discovered that mammals and birds share homologous forebrain structures, the neurobiological foundation for complex cognition (7). On the basis of this evidence, corvids and parrots were tested for cognitive abilities to explore the evolutionary development of cognition. There are two main hypotheses to explain the evolution of intelligence. According to the physical intelligence hypothesis, complex cognitive capabilities evolved according to the physical demands of the environment, such as the need to memorize location, time, and availability of food or how it can be extracted with tools. The social intelligence hypothesis focuses on the social environment and the requirement to anticipate and manipulate the behavior of individuals from the same and other species. These mechanisms need not be mutually exclusive and might interact with phylogenetic heritage and developmental constraints (8).

Birds can be jerks, and the Internet is full of proof. Be they duck, ostrich, swan, goose, crow, parrot, penguin, chicken, emu, ostrich or seagull, none can be trusted. They bite, scratch, kick, and flap.

Ow! Mother...

Great ending. I guess I'm lucky, I've never been attacked by birds. The gulls are really good at stealing food.

My son and his girlfriend were in Iceland and a bunch of birds started attacking them a la Alfred Hitchcock. They put their jackets and hoods on and the birds shat all over them!

My friend has a rooster that attacks her and will even attack the chickens.

She can't bring herself to get rid of him because he's so handsome and she's such a softy...and he's terrorizing her egg laying hens. :fpalm:

Birds can be mean. Just wash your car and leave it outside on a sunny day. It won't last for two days without getting hit by bird poo, and that stuff eats into the lacquer like acid. :p

My dad used to say it's because the car is very shiny after washing, and then the birds look down and they see their own reflection in your car, and it startles them so much that they just shit themselves. :p

When we lived in Coronado, we watched a Blue Heron fly in and take a foot long fish from two seagulls who were fighting over it. BH pecks at gulls, gulls back off, BH grabs fish, gulps it down...show is over except for a few seagull wing-flaps. These birds are rough, tough, mean bullies carrying a sharp sword-like beak...I get why the seagulls got out of the way.

When not beating up seagulls, the BH parked himself over my door pooping large piles while lording over about 200 yards in either direction of the shoreline. Very large and in-charge. No other birds, including the ospreys, challenged him...and ospreys are toughies themselves.

BTW, I didn't challenge him either. I just cleaned up the poop and stayed out of his way. He lives there today while I moved to AZ.

It wasn't an actual horror movie, or at least, not in the modern sense of the term, with loads of gratuitous gore. It was actually more of a thriller, although it may have been billed as a horror movie when it came out, back in 1960. ;) But okay, since you and I are the only two members online at the moment, I'll give you the answer: the movie is "Psycho (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psycho_%281960_film%29)", by Alfred Hitchcock. It's a classic. ;)

And here's the clue... Near the end of the clip above with the cat, you can hear a woman's voice say "Mrs. Bates?", and then about five seconds later she screams. Mrs. Bates was the deceased mother of motel owner Norman Bates, and the woman screams because the "Mrs. Bates" she sees sitting in the chair is actually the decomposed corpse of the real Mrs. Bates.

I'm not sure anymore how she died — i.e. whether she died of natural causes or whether Norman killed her — but throughout the movie, you regularly see her shadow in front of the window, and you hear her speaking to Norman in an authoritarian and possessive tone, but all of that was Norman himself, suffering from multiple-personality disorder. And on the rare occasions that you see a glimpse of Mrs. Bates moving the curtain aside in order to look outside, that too was Norman, wearing his mother's clothes and a wig.

It is only when the young woman finds Mrs. Bates' room and goes inside that the viewer discovers that the real Mrs. Bates has been dead for ages already, and that it is Norman himself who is spying on the girls through the various peepholes in the walls, and who killed the girl in the shower. ;)

I saw a woman do that on Conan O'Brien's show once. It was completely unexpected, and Conan just about shrank away in horror, as did the audience.

The woman brought insects with her to the studio, including a cockroach. She let the cockroach walk on the table while she provided some information about their behavior, et al. Then suddenly, without any prior warning, she picked up the cockroach, bit its head off and ate it. It was disgusting. :vom:

Well, I don't watch horror movies anymore either — I don't even have cable TV anymore. ;) But there's a difference between the horror movies of yesteryear and those of today. The old ones were often billed as horror when they weren't all that horrifying. They were often more like thrillers, with only an occasional bit of blood, but they were usually billed as horror because they contained either a scifi- or a fantasy-related theme. In those days, the "horror" label was used more in relationship to the scare factor of the movie, as opposed to anything gory — although there were some of those too already, of course.

An example would for instance be "The Prophecy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prophecy)", which was billed as horror, but which is more of a thriller. It's a movie about a war in Heaven between the angels of Michael and those of Gabriel, and the war somehow finds itself a way to Earth when both sides come looking for the soul of a recently deceased psychotic colonel from the Korean War.

Simon (Eric Stoltz), one of the angels who stayed loyal to God, wants to find the soul in order to hide it from the other side, while Gabriel (Christopher Walken) — and one of his lieutenants before him — wants to find it before Lucifer (Viggo Mortensen) can lay claim on it and take it to Hell, so that this evil colonel would be able to fight for Gabriel and break the stalemate in Heaven. And in the midst of it all is the LAPD detective Thomas Dagget (Elias Koteas), who at one point in the past was about to be ordained as a Catholic priest, but who then suddenly got a vision in which he saw angels killing each other, after which he turned his back on religion and became a cop.

I have that movie on VHS — purchased — and I've already watched it so many times (since 1995) that I know all of the dialogs by heart. ;) The movie starts with a voice-over from Simon, who is seen standing near what appear to be the scorched remains of an angel in the middle of the desert. The voice-over goes something like this...

"I remember the first war...
The way the sky burned...
The faces of angels... destroyed...

I saw one third of Heaven's Legion vanish,
and the creation of Hell.

I stood with my brothers and watched Lucifer fall.

But now, my brothers are not brothers,
and we have come here, where we are mortal,
to steal the dark soul not yet Lucifer's,
to serve our cause.

I have always obeyed...
But I never thought
the war would happen again..."

The trailer is a bit misleading on account of the sequence of the scenes. The angel bursting into birds — ravens or crows? — at the end is not Gabriel (Christopher Walken) but Lucifer (Viggo Mortensen), and that scene has nothing to do with the gunshot fired by Katherine Henley (Virginia Madsen). ;)

I don't watch movies as a rule.....so I am blessed. Keeps me out of trivial conversations.

Some movies are most definitely worth watching — not all, but many of them nevertheless — if not for the story itself then for the acting performances and the artistic (or otherwise ingenious) directing, especially when there's a renowned director involved. Examples of such would be the many samurai-themed movies by Akira Kurosawa, and most of the movies by Alfred Hitchcock — which includes the original "Psycho" movie from 1960.

When you're dealing with movies from Francis Ford Coppola, Oliver Stone, Ridley Scott, Stanley Kubrick et al, then you know it's going to be worth your time to watch them. And what Peter Jackson did with the "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy was simple phenomenal, even if he did leave out certain story arcs and characters from the books — he took even more of an artistic license with his adaptations of "The Hobbit", and I personally wouldn't rate those as highly as the three "Lord Of The Rings" movies.

Rabbits are one of my favourites. I was born in the Chinese year of the rabbit. Astrologically, I am what is know of as a triple Aries- or Aries Sun/Aries Moon/ Aries ascendant. When I looked up the Chinese equivalent, I was an Rabbit/Cat, but I relate more to the rabbit, more family oriented, living in a burrow, hidden away and safe, where I can twitch my whiskers, to feel if all is safe, and if so, I can get outside into the garden. In Native American Astrolgy, similar to the China's on the day born the month born and the year born with all three I was the Eagle. All of which helps because some bright spark, at a Reiki seminar told me I was born on the worst day of the week, a Wednesday, and the worst day of the months, the 19th, then to cap it all I maŕried a man born on the It as of March, the 15th.

My sister, had a couple or rabbits running around the house as pets for the two kids, and they ate any loose electricity chords near the floor, till they were unusable, and dangerous. They ate a hole in the back of the lounge, then made themselves a nest in the middle, so the It was very difficult to get them out.

For our American friends who are old enough, you may remember Denise Lynn, who did many seminars, in the 1980s, one of which was to make a Native American Drum. She then had another night where a couple of hundred of us were to find out our totem. Those who had previously made ttheir drums, drummed for us whilst we meditated on our Totem. I don't see any pictures at all usually, but imagine my surprise, when I saw this white rabbit, standing just behind the head, on the back of the Golden Eagle. A lady who used to visit our web page, way back, in the early nineteen eighties, when we first began a web page, put the image together for me, and I was so thrilled. IT'S still on our members webpage.

Rabbits are one of my favourites. I was born in the Chinese year of the rabbit. Astrologically, I am what is know of as a triple Aries- or Aries Sun/Aries Moon/ Aries ascendant.

Wow, that's unusual, I don't think I've ever seen a chart like that...Do you have Mars or Aries influences elsewhere. Anything beyond 3 similar influences is going rare in a chart. Have you ever checked to see if you were born within an eclipse or full or new moon...

My son's girlfriend once had a marmot come to the campfire and crawl on her as if it was her pet. She was a bit freaked out at the time. Marmots, minks, ferrets, weasels, otters, mongoose, fishers, ermine...it's a fantastic family of animals.

At four minutes he mentions cats and the carnage they wreak upon native bird populations. He does not like the hypocrisy of some commenters. Cats can be a problem which is why there has been a movement for quite some time now to both keep them indoors and have them fixed. Some folks declaw their cats, but I saw that first hand and would never do it. Those poor cats were never the same afterwards.

Look at the pile of vegetables at 6:47. What's up with that?

I don't recall if it was on this forum...there was an old black and white video of Irish farmers using rat terriers to catch rats in the potato fields. They lined up with their pitchforks and a slew of dogs. Then they turned over the earth to reveal the rats and the dogs went wild! There were a lot of rats. It was carnage. And I'm glad it was in black and white.

Rats have followed humans everywhere.

It's not just rats, by the way, but all kinds of invading species and pests, even non-indigenous plants that threaten the natural ecosystem ─ some are poisonous, while others suffocate other plants.

He works for a non-profit organization which itself works for the province. He doesn't like killing the animals, but he knows he has to, and he does it as mercifully as possible. They also catch feral cats ─ which is a very difficult and dangerous enterprise ─ and then those cats are taken to a special facility where they are sterilized or neutered, and then they're set free again.

So true. My yard is an homage to invasive species: multiflora rose, japanese honeysuckle, japanese stipple grass, wavy-leaf basket grass - scourge! - mile-a-minute, and more.

The cats are indeed dangerous when feral. There was an Animal Planet (I think) episode where a man had a house full of cats and it had gotten out of control. The house was filled with feces and urine. The animal control folks had to wear masks due to the ammonia. They had stacks of cat boxes. I think there were twenty-something of them. Many cats had mange, parasites, etc.

The workers were marveling that the man had been able to live inside the house in such conditions.

In this case, crazy cat man.

I OD'd him on his catnip treats and now he won't touch them.

He's always meow'in his head off in the morning for food treats, what's bad is he's getting chunkier ... :)

Anyway, the other morning I gave him some catnip treats and he chomped then down, and then meow'd for more...so i gave him some more and kept giving him more until he was sated. Normally, I switch them up with several different types but I wanted to see if i could get him buzzed on catnip, when he was little he would just start running around in circles. He then disappeared for a couple hours and since he came back, came down he won't touch them anymore. I guess he disliked the coming down part... :)

I'll never forget my dad jumping all over my case for saying it. He said there's nothing 'cool' about that. There used to be some great videos of elephants going berserkers under the big top, which greatly appealed to me. And I confess I have mixed feelings about video showing animal trainers being killed by killer whales.

I am filled with compassion and sorrow for the human being thrown around but understand well the animal's rage at being kept in captivity.

As I used to live smack dab in the center of killer whale territory and have witnessed whole pods breaching while they hunt, some as close as 50 feet away, I have a special feeling for the beauty, wildness, intelligence of these animals. Also, their sense of "fun" some of which unfortunately can involve terrible a use of smaller marine mammals.

I know I'll get hated for this one:

My neighbor's wife told me this morning a hawk tried to get my cat but he fought it off ... apparently ... he's still here but yesterday i did notice that he has shed some blood here and there but I couldn't find any wounds on him though I did notice him to be limping a little ... I wasn't sure.

My neighbor asked me this morning if I was going to keep my cat inside now and I said, I wasn't sure. I told him I had this thing about animals being kept in confined spaces. I feel that sort of existence is contrary to their natural instincts. To keep them cooped up is akin to denying them a fulfilling life. :( I don't prefer to have pets for that reason alone but I inherited the baby kitty from my daughter.

I do care about him and i do care for him ... I try to give him some momentary respite from the trials and tribulations of the wild life but I can't get myself to restrain him. I think he would appreciate it ... I always keep my back door open, weather permitting so he can come and go as he pleases. That has its own problems. His nemesis across the street, a.k.a. Max, a.k.a. The Black Monster comes over and helps himself to my poor defenseless kitty kat's food while he just watches passively as the monster does it. If he is in the mood that is, they have fought for years with my cat usually getting the worst of it, but I think the balance changed over time ... The Black monster has made overtures to be friends with defenseless kitty kat but he will have none of it.

Emil El Zapato

No doubt about that Elen, but there it is a nutshell, though. Humans trying to make animals subservient, but in this case ostensibly for the kitty cat's benefit. A cat such as that is so 'natural' he/she, actually by the coloring it is female, doesn't belong living in a human environment. But there is a lot of cat vs. human issues playing out there. If cats aren't 'socialized' early, at least to some degree they never will be. The cat is a danger to any bystanding 'innocents'. Proceed with extreme caution. :)

Not actual fire, but they do possess two venomous glands in their mouths, they have a vicious bite, they have very strong and sharp claws, they can run at speeds up to 20 km/h (12 mph), they can stand on their hind legs, they can climb trees, and they're very intelligent ─ they can count up to six and they can identify individuals.

They mainly eat carrion ─ which they can smell from over 9 km (~ 5 miles) away ─ but they do also stalk and attack live prey up to the size of a water buffalo, and they're quite aggressive in the wild. So you better not get too close to them. ;)

In that case, I recommend you go back to school.

Rodents are omnivores. Otters, ferrets, minks, weasels and wolverines ─ which are all related ─ are mandatory carnivores. They are as different from a rodent as a wolf is from a tiger.

That family which also includes ermine and fishers is quite extensive. The Mustelidae (looked it up) are nocturnal and crepuscular. (another awesome word) Also in the family are polecats, martens, badgers, tarya, sable, stoat, and grison (which look like badgers to me).

They appeared around 40 million years ago, around the same time as rodents. So there's your 40 million year old connection pal. ;)

I recall that Modwiz prefers mongoose which are part of the family Feliformia. (that is, in fact, related to cats)

And otters like to slide on snow like crows and dogs and polar bears.

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata ─ one of my personal favorite piano pieces (not that I can play it) ─ is indeed an excellent piece to play before an elephant. ;)

By the way, did you notice the sudden reaction of the elephant when the chord changes from having a major third to a minor third at around 00:50? Also, the elephant turns toward the pianist at around 03:04 because of the prolonged descent down the scale without that any bass notes are being played ─ elephants are very sensitive to low frequencies and rhythm, and that descending run breaks the rhythm by omitting the bass line.

I am either way convinced that the animal both appreciated and enjoyed the piece. The way it responded to certain passages and transitions ─ e.g. the insertion of diminished chords ─ says it all, and elephants are after all one of the most intelligent species on Earth. :)

I believe it.

We went to a reptile show once. The man clearly adored all of his animals. He showed us an alligator and then a crocodile. He explained that he could feed his alligator and become familiar with it and it would not be aggressive or dangerous as long as he was careful.

He then showed us a small crocodile with it's jaws firmly wrapped shut. The man explained that no matter how much he fed the crocodile, and talked to it, and sheltered it, it would eat him the first chance it got.

Apparently, alligators are much less aggressive.

I've known folks who have reptiles as pets and have seen the affection of which you speak. I could befriend a small snake. They're cool, as long as they're not poisonous. :p

One thing, though... There's no point in talking to a snake, because they're deaf. They can feel vibrations in the ground ─ it is part of how they hunt, together with the flicking of the tongue, which is actually their olfactory sense ─ but they're as deaf as a brick wall. ;)

Dreamtimer

To us, black snakes are harmless. To the babies of animals like raccoons and foxes they're likely very dangerous. Black snakes usually eat rodent and lizards and climb up trees to get to bird nests.

But a full grown snake can eat an adult squirrel. I imagine fox or raccoon babies in dens in the ground or in tree nests would be a tasty snack.

Certainly, a black snake will feed a den of fox pups well. The momma always looks a little skinny. Nursing pups takes a lot out of a mom.

The particular sound is the hum. Not any of the buzzing.

Last time around I compared it to the sound of a space ship about to rise up from over the hill. It's a cool sound but I got really sick of it by the end.

On the subject of 'gender bending' fish, which is a very unscientific term, I found a clip of what I was thinking of. (also, some fish do have lips, as you can see)

This fish, a Kobudai, is a kind of wrasse. It's been described as "sequential hermaphrodite", meaning a female can transform into male under certain conditions.

This is just cool, and part of nature.

However, a great deal of gender bending phenomena being observed are being caused by chemicals in the animals' environment which can mimic or screw with the natural hormones.

This happens with humans in unfortunate ways, such as lowered sperm count.

We reap what we sow, even when we don't know.
