The Brentwood home once owned by Marilyn Monroe jusy recently has sold for $7.25 million, or $325,000 above the asking price.

The residence, built in 1929, was the only property the singer, actress and model owned independent of a husband. She bought the property in the early 1960s following the end of her third marriage, to playwright Arthur Miller, for $75,000.

The hacienda-style house came partially furnished, and her mortgage payments were $320 a month, according to reports in The Times following Monroe’s death in 1962.

Set behind gates at the end of a cul-de-sac, the single-story home has 2,624 square feet of living space, four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Common areas include a formal living room with a fireplace, a family room and an office. Saltillo tile floors and beamed ceilings are among the interior details.

Outdoors, lawns surround a brick patio and kidney-shaped swimming pool. Mature trees, a guest house and a small citrus grove fill out the half-acre grounds.

The property had been listed for $6.9 million. Lisa Optican of Mercer Vine had the listing. Richard Stearns of Partners Trust represented the buyer.

Monroe, who was 36 when she died, starred in box-office hits including “Some Like It Hot” (1959) and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1953)."

Removal of Westerly mystery object scrubbed, rough surf to blame

WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — We’ll all have to wait a little while longer for the mystery to be solved surrounding an object sitting under the water off East Beach in Westerly.

Rocky’s Tree Service was planning to pull an eight-legged metallic object up from the ocean floor Tuesday night. But the extrication has been canceled due to deteriorating conditions on the beach, East Beach Association President Peter Brockmann confirmed.

“We’ve had high surf and strong rip tides for the past couple of days. Not sure if [it’s] related to Gert, but [the storm] will make matters worse for the next couple of days,” Brockmann said.

There’s no word yet on when the removal will be rescheduled.

The circular object is located near the Niantic Avenue entrance of East Beach. Brockmann told Eyewitness News on Friday that neither local residents nor the harbor master could recall seeing the object prior to last summer.

David Bowie's Spiders From Mars cohort, guitarist Mick Ronson, is the focus of a new documentary called, Beside Bowie: The Mick Ronson Story.

Bowie provided exclusive voiceovers for the film, which looks at the late Ronson's underappreciated career as a sideman for artists like Bob Dylan (as a member of the Rolling Thunder Revue), Lou Reed (on Transformer), John Mellencamp (on "Jack and Diane") and main guitarist on five Bowie albums, including Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars and Aladdin Sane.

Beside Bowie will feature live footage of Ronson in action in addition to archival previously unreleased backstage footage, unseen Mick Rock photographs and more.

"Both Mick Ronson and David Bowie together were the ultimate duo. They performed and recorded like magicians and created masterpieces that will live on forever," director Jon Brewer said in a statement. Ronson died in 1993 at the age of 46.

Removal of Westerly mystery object scrubbed, rough surf to blame

WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) — We’ll all have to wait a little while longer for the mystery to be solved surrounding an object sitting under the water off East Beach in Westerly.

Rocky’s Tree Service was planning to pull an eight-legged metallic object up from the ocean floor Tuesday night. But the extrication has been canceled due to deteriorating conditions on the beach, East Beach Association President Peter Brockmann confirmed.

“We’ve had high surf and strong rip tides for the past couple of days. Not sure if [it’s] related to Gert, but [the storm] will make matters worse for the next couple of days,” Brockmann said.

There’s no word yet on when the removal will be rescheduled.

The circular object is located near the Niantic Avenue entrance of East Beach. Brockmann told Eyewitness News on Friday that neither local residents nor the harbor master could recall seeing the object prior to last summer.

Dina Karpova epitomises the aspirational and determined Russians who are embracing the capitalist ethos of the West. A glamorous international property broker, she capitalises on Russia’s love for all things English. Dina has sent her own son to school in the UK and now she is fast-tracking her clients’ children into England’s high society by introducing them to aristocratic families and getting them into the most prestigious Public Schools. The film follows the journey of 11-year-old step brothers, Natan and Vasilli. Their businessman father, Boris, wants them to get into a top school and it is up to Dina and educational consultant Charles Bonas to prepare them in time for their interviews. The boys are sent on a bespoke course in Dorset to an aristocratic house where they learn how to shoot and play polo, in the hope of integrating them into English high society. They are also given intensive academic tutoring. In the eighties I ordered a pint of ale in London. The bartender served me and said, "A lady ordering a pint. Very rare, very rare." The ladies all drank half-pints of lager and lime.

We went to the Hare and Hound in the lake district (in the early 90s). We drank Old Peculiar. I ordered a half pint for the first round and pints after that. They were unsure of these crazy Americans at first but then, once we showed our appreciation for their delicious beer, they were totally cool.

Old Peculiar on tap is exquisite.

We have "pub signs" That we got at the Renaissance Festival. One is the Drunken Dragon. They're fun. I had a Mormon Missionary in my house once who could not stop frowning in disapproval at them and demanded and explanation. I said it's a fun family event and these remind me. She was not satisfied. (And I didn't give a hoot).

Nothing, you are alone with your negative description about eye-rise. Other than you, there has never ever been a complaint/comment about multiple alerts for malicious content when opened. Are you able to provide a screenshot?

There is no malicious content at Eye-Rise, Kathy. ;) But what is possible is that he stumbled upon a thread with a video or another link that his Avast Antivirus got triggered by for whatever reason.

Antivirus software mainly uses two mechanisms for detecting threats. The first is a local database of virus and other malware signatures, but this needs regular updating and it is always running at least two to three weeks behind on the evolution of malware development. The second mechanism is a heuristics scanner which attempts to assess a threat by looking at certain parameters in the incoming stream of bytes.

The screenshot Nothing has provided is either way too small to be able to tell what's really in that warning box. I'll see whether I can enlarge the dimensions to which an attachment gets rescaled by the forum engine, but this will only have an effect on future attachment uploads.

Attached photos and other images are static bitmaps, not scalable vector graphics. When you upload them as attachments to your posts, then they are effectively sized down to a preset size by the forum engine. But I'll see whether I can do something about the size. :hmm:

The broadcasters made their debut during China’s annual World Internet Conference, an event meant to be China’s Davos for the tech sector as well as a platform for China’s vision of the internet.


While China is home to some of the world’s largest tech companies and some 800 million internet users, its internet is one of the most controlled in the world. Observers worry China is turning into a digital police state, with technology from iris and gait recognition being deployed to monitor activists, ethnic minorities in places like Xinjiang, and regular citizens.

At the conference in Wuzhen in southern China, attendees saw their photos flash on a screen as soon as they passed through security checks using facial recognition. In a session on fintech, companies discussed cooperating with law enforcement, providing information for negligent citizens to be put on social credit blacklists.

“We are an important advocate for peace in cyberspace and a guardian of order,” said Huang Kunming, head of Communist Party’s propaganda department, speaking at the event. “China stands ready to safeguard the sound order of cyberspace.”

According to Xinhua, the AI technology is not limited to news presenting. The systems can be customised to different clients in other industries. For Xinhua’s already tightly-scripted and controlled state news presenters, the AI anchors take things a step further. Video of the Chinese anchor quickly spread on social media in China, with many viewers impressed as they were

alarmed. “A little bit horrible,” one said, to which another responded: “Really scary.”

There’s something beautiful in deciding how one’s final moments should be confined to the memory of our loved ones. Advances in technology and changing mindsets seem to have people wondering why a coffin in the ground should have to be the only option of final resting place. Residents in Washington state have a brand new vision of returning to the Earth. Now a bill being sponsored in the state’s legislature could see Washington become the first state to legalize human composting.

A Tree of Me

The bill, backed by state Senator Jamie Pedersen, would allow for the “recomposition” of human remains, a process which speeds up decomposition and turns remains into a nutrient-packed soil which could be returned to families.

“People from all over the state who wrote to me are very excited about the prospect of becoming a tree or having a different alternative for themselves,” Pedersen told NBCnews.

Although “becoming a tree” and other futuristic burial ideas aren’t entirely new concepts, Washington would become the first state to allow human composting if the bill is passed. The idea isn’t just futuristic, it’s also economical. More and more Americans are turning to crowdfunding to support funeral costs, with the average funeral costing more than $7,000 in 2017, according to the National Funeral Directors Association. The recomposition process in comparison is somewhat cheaper with costs expected to fall around $5,500.

Safety First

The process is very similar to traditional composting. Unembalmed human remains are placed in a composting chamber and left to decompose with organic material like woodchips or straw. Air is occasionally pulled into the chamber to help microbes speed up decomposition and in about one month all that remains is a cubic yard of compost.

A five-month study, in which six donor bodies were decomposed, was led by researcher Lynne Carpenter-Boggs, Associate Professor of Sustainable and Organic Agriculture at Washington State. The study was carefully controlled to prevent spreading any harmful pathogens, a concern which led to the defeat of a similar bill sponsored by Pederson in 2017.

Carpenter-Boggs’ study concluded in August that the remains produced were safe and she plans to submit her research for publication in 2019. If the bill passes, it would take effect May 1, 2020. Until then, we can keep dreaming of “becoming trees” but Pederson’s bill could open doors to new burial alternatives and ways we can choose to have our memory honored."

As in all major shifts in consciousness and energy there often is a backlash or catch up period to adjust to the new energies. This last wave has brought quite a few bad nasties out of the woodwork. Lightworkers everywhere are being challenged on every level. The Archons are pulling out all the stops to maintain control. It is futile. We are seeing disruptive beings we have never seen before doing all they can to muddy the waters and prevent this shift from happening. Leaders who have aligned with these Archonic energies in their lust for power and wealth are falling apart. Their dark rituals are not working and the forces they call upon are being removed. This leaves them ineffective, dysfunctional and some are becoming blithering idiots exposing themselves for all to see. Never underestimate a cornered animal and they have painted themselves into a corner. The problem is the entities who have been manipulating the fallen humans are being cut loose and they are angry, running amuck. No more than ever it is imperative to maintain one’s self-authority and do clearings. This is your body, your mind, your incarnation and no one has the right to mess with it. This does not mean they won’t try. Center yourself, know what love is and what love is not. Your core essence is a loving, joyous, powerful manifesting God/Goddess. Stand in your divinity. This too shall pass. Practice loving detachment and compassion with those who have not achieved self-mastery. Here is the healing technique to clear these energies. But let me first say ...

Unfortunately many do not understand that the Eceti ranch is a private property ...
And guest cannot visit without a requested e-mail invite ... Noting even during paid
events including this week's Eceti annual 4th July conference ...

Saying that, I will comment that my old friend James Gilliland's desire to keep peace
and harmony at his ranch during these events is totally supported from someone
like myself who has lived and work there during an extended period of time in the past.

Still i can appreciate and understand Clif's disappointment and dis-pleasure with this
news (apparently) denying his request to visit (for the first time) there during this
weeks conference . Though i do find it odd and interesting (since Clif only lives a short
3 hours drive away) why the great need and desire to go now?

Though it's no secret that Clif has publicly criticized James Gilliland and his ranch
on social media in the past, Clif also is having an ongoing online beef with James 'friend'
Jordan Sather, while also having disputes with Corey Goode's (a conference speaker this year)
claims of encounters with cosmic other worldly beings - So should there really be any
real surprise to Clif's being prohibited (by management) in his attending this weeks
events at the ranch?

Oddly though I am with you Clif on all this - I am sadly disappointed for you as well
in this development. I have not always agreed with James - politics and sometimes
even his taste judgement in personal matters - So i sympathize (with you) and wish
you and James will come to terms and (hopefully in the future) can and will make peace.

Having personally heard the testimonies of upwards of a thousand people (while living
there) I can honestly say - no one has ever told me it wasn't worth the time and trip ...
And with you only living a short ride away, I'm hoping it all will amend and follows
through in you having your own personal Eceti experience - much sooner than later.

Due to ongoing public slander of James Gilliland, ECETI, and harassment of some of our speakers along with the open admission of how Cliff prides himself on being a provocateur, trouble maker, in addition to his constant threats inviting people to sue ECETI on the basis of slanderous assumptions, and lets not mention threats using legal codes having nothing to do with ECETI a private ranch upon which a private event is happening by invitation only we have chosen to not allow Cliff to attend the ECETI conference. He and some of his associates and followers are a security risk. Some have already crashed the gate and entered the property illegally and were immediately escorted off the property. I am sure these tresspasses would make Cliff very happy along with the doxing directly due to his acting like a victim in a matter he started and continues to perpetuate, a matter upon which we have addressed factually and professionally. His sense of entitlement, arrogance, agression and narcism have us baffled.

We have to ask the question after his slanderous remarks and harassment would you invite him to your ranch or home? Why would we expect him to behave any differently at the ranch. His agenda in coming to the ranch is obvious we are merely setting boundaries choosing not to participate or subject others to his transgressions.

His constant slander and harassment have been well documented, they have no foundation in truth or merit, again we are worried about his mental stability posing a threat to the peace and tranquility of the Sanctuary along with guests and harassment of our speakers.

This will be dealt with legally in the very near future using real codes and violations. He and his followers attempts to force their way on the property through threats and other means will be unsuccessful. There is a high level of security and any trespassers and disrupters will be escorted off the property immediately.

We have to ask ourselves are we creating heaven on Earth or are we pushing our own unhealed agendas. Quiet enjoyment of the land, freedom of speech, the right to gather and practice our spiritual beliefs as long as no harm comes to others are Constitutional and Divine Rights. We would suggest Cliff and his followers honor these rights. We are not and have not been the trespassers in this situation. We have never met Cliff, he has never been to ECETI nor has he ever attended any of the 33 years of healing sessions, ongoing workshops and classes at ECETI as tens of thousands grateful people. So upon what does he form his be lie fs and assumptions and what is motivating him? It is not the first time unconscious people, victims and seekers of fame and notoriety have tried to gain it at the expense of ECETI nor do we expect it to be the last. We would like to remind Cliff rather than boasting of being enlightened and a master all enlightened beings operate under Universal Law. Universal Peace, Brother/Sisterly Love, Individual Freedom and Prosperity for All. We might want to add service to others and impeccable integrity. His actions have fallen far short. We strongly suggest It would be wise for him to direct his energies into taking care of his own health and mental wellbeing. Again, we go back to three kinds of business. Your business, Gods business and other people’s business. Other people’s business is God’s business. He might want to talk with the tens of thousands of people who have had incredible experiences at ECETI rather than continue on his negative driven agenda.

The UFO phenomenon appears to me as a paraphysical intrusion into our physical dimension by an unknown intelligence or unknown sentient entitities, paraphysically materializing themselves to a “pre-selected” observer (or a group of observers, whether small or large) and presenting to the observer as a physical extraterrestrial phenomenon and visitation for reasons yet unknown.

The “pre-selection” also seems to include a particular location as well as a particular time.

The phenomenon seems to be able to materialize and de-materialize at will and even seems to be capable of “transmogrifying” itself into any shape or form (as in the words of John A. Keel).

However, the phenomenon does not seem to be able to survive in our physical dimension except for a few seconds or a few minutes at a time.

Some researchers claim that the phenomenon seems to be able to temporarily affect our physical parameters (such as radar, etc.).

Yet the phenomenon also seems to be incapable of being photographed with clarity, if at all.

And on many occasions, it seems to me that these “UFOs” only deceptively appear (to the observer) to be utilizing some type of a propulsion system as they seem to take off into the distant sky at an unimaginable rate of speed.

Finally, by ‘phenomenon’ here, I would like to include both the ‘craft’ as well as the ‘entities’ and their seemingly paraphysical capabilities.

By the way, here is another of my favorite quotes from Dr. Jacques Vallee, the world’s top-most authority on the UFO phenomenon in my opinion:

“Contact between human percipients and the UFO phenomenon always occurs under conditions controlled by the latter. Its characteristic feature is a factor of absurdity that leads to a rejection of the story by the upper layers of the target society and an absorption at a deep unconscious level of the symbols conveyed by the encounter.”

I am the first to admit that all of the above is purely my personal speculation, but it’s the best that I could do, considering this sobering fact that:

Even though the UFO phenomenon seems to exist, it has not proven itself to be absolute, tangible evidence that we have been visited by actual physical extraterrestrial biological entities in any actual physical spacecraft of any kind. The term “UFOs” is misleading since we still do not know if they are really objects or if they are actually flying as we understand flying to be (as through the use of a propulsion system), as often mentioned by Dr. Jacques Vallee.

Last night 11:00 p.m.: Spokane breaks the record for the most single-day snowfall in the month of October with 6.8 inches! This breaks the old record of 5.9" set back in 1957.

Last night 11:00 p.m.: Spokane breaks the record for the most single-day snowfall in the month of October with 6.8 inches! This breaks the old record of 5.9" set back in 1957.

This weather (amount of snow) is unusual, but a large wet front came in from the Pacific Ocean - colliding with a Arctic blast coming down from Canada, and now it's heading Eastward.

Note on the other-side west of the Cascades (Seattle), it was a rain event.

Yes, a friend of mine from Wisconsin has also reported snow and freezing temperatures. I supposed it's "normal" there for this time of the year, but compared to European weather, it's still quite early. :hmm:

At least here in Finland in the recent years we have had snow in late October, but not this year so far and I mean the most southern part where I live, northern part is a different story. Usually first snow comes normally in early November though and then melts away.

Over forty years ago, I worked on Andros Island, Bahamas (AUTEC Base (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Undersea_Test_and_Evaluation_Center))... It was where i witnessed two USO's (Unidentified Submerged Objects) ... Though the ones i saw, emerged from the deep to quietly fly away and vanish into thin air (as if into another dimension).

Over the years i have reaffirmed this experience with another who was with me during one of the sightings - just to make sure i didn't imagine the incident.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Maybe it was the date night when he and his wife spent two hours driving 19 miles to dinner, or the homeless encampment down the street, or the fact that homes were so expensive that his children could never afford to live near him.

Whatever the reasons, and there were many, Steve MacDonald decided he was done with Los Angeles. He wanted a city that was smaller and cheaper, big enough that he could find a decent restaurant but not so much that its problems felt unsolvable and every little task like an odyssey. After the pandemic hit and he and his wife went through a grand reprioritizing, they centered on Spokane, where their son went to college. They had always liked visiting and decided it would be a nice place to move.

Eastern Washington was of course much colder. Until this winter, MacDonald, a native Southern Californian, had never shoveled snow. But their new house is twice as big as their Los Angeles home, cost less than half as much and is a five-minute commute from City Hall, where MacDonald works as Spokane’s director of community and economic development.

He arrives each day to tackle a familiar conundrum: how to prevent Spokane from developing the same kinds of problems that people like him are moving there to escape.

“I’m realizing more and more how important the future prosperity of this city is about getting housing right,” he said. “If we don’t, it’s going to track more closely with what happened in Los Angeles.”

MacDonald knows the pattern, and so does everyone else who has been following the U.S. housing market. The story plays out locally but is national in scope. It is the story of people leaving high-cost cities because they’ve been priced out or become fed up with how impossible the housing problem seems. Then it becomes the story of a city trying to tame prices by building more housing, followed by the story of neighbors fighting to prevent it, followed by the story of less expensive cities being deluged with buyers from more expensive cities, followed by the less expensive cities descending into the same problems and struggling with the same solutions.

It’s easier to change where we live than it is to change how we live.

Whether it’s Boise, Idaho, or Reno, Nevada, or Portland, Oregon, or Austin, Texas, the American housing market is caught in a vicious cycle of broken expectations that operates like a food chain: The sharks flee New York and Los Angeles and gobble up the housing in Austin and Portland, whose priced-out homebuyers swim to the cheaper feeding grounds of places like Spokane. The cycle brings bitterness and “Don’t Move Here” bumper stickers — and in Spokane it has been supercharged during the pandemic and companies’ shift to remote work.

No matter how many times it happens, no matter how many cities and states try to blunt it with recommendations to build more housing and provide subsidies for those who can’t afford the new stuff, no matter how many zoning battles are fought or homeless camps lamented, no next city, as of yet, seems better prepared than the last one was.

Just a few years ago, a Spokane household that made the median income could afford about two-thirds of the homes on the market, according to Zillow. Now home prices are up 60% over the past two years, pricing out broad swaths of the populace and fomenting an escalating housing crisis marked by resentment, zoning fights and tents.

Being an “it” place was something Spokane’s leaders had long hoped for. The city and its metropolitan region have spent decades trying to convince out-of-town professionals and businesses that it would be a great place to move. Now their wish has been granted, and the city is grappling with the consequences.

Growth is never perfect, and Spokane’s influx has been accompanied by a booming employment market that has increased wages, turned abandoned warehouses into offices and helped the city recover jobs lost during the pandemic. This is normally called progress. But for people who already lived in and around Spokane or the suburbs just across the border in north Idaho, the shift from living in a place that was broadly affordable to broadly not has come on with the suddenness of a car crash. Now many workers are wondering what the point of growth is if it only makes it harder to keep a roof over their head.

Even the mayor isn’t immune. In an interview, Nadine Woodward, a Republican who was elected in 2019, noted that her son and daughter-in-law, newlyweds who moved home during the pandemic, were living with her and her husband while they figured out where they could afford to settle. They came back to Spokane from Seattle, where they were long ago priced out. Austin was the next city on their list, but then its home prices shot up to about where Seattle’s were when they left. At this point, even Spokane is seeming pricey.

“I never thought I’d see the day where my adult children couldn’t afford a home in Spokane,” Woodward said.

A Between Place

Standing by a snow-covered lawn on an overcast afternoon, Steve Silbar, a local real estate agent who has been selling homes for five years, explained Spokane’s transformation in terms of a 6-inch screen. When he thinks of a typical buyer, Silbar said, he imagines a couple thousands of miles away, perhaps on a beach, looking at their phones. They’re considering moving to a cheaper city, and do a search for homes.

Clients like this are why Silbar invested $3,000 in a camera that allows him to create three-dimensional tours of his listings, and why the exterior of every home he sells is showcased with an aerial video shot by a drone. In a market that attracts so many outsiders, a virtual walk through the interior and bird’s-eye flight over the street can be the nudge buyers need to bid on a home they’ve never entered, in a city they’ve never seen.

“I have to assume that the person that is looking at my listing has never been to Spokane, does not know about Spokane, has no clue,” Silbar said.

Spokane is the largest city on the road from Seattle to Minneapolis. This fact is frequently cited as the logic behind its economy: It’s between things. The city was incorporated in 1881 and grew into a transportation hub for the surrounding mining and logging industries. It remains a hub, only instead of shipping out timber and silver, businesses revolve around Fairchild Air Force Base and a collection of hospitals and universities that draw from the rural towns that stretch from eastern Washington to northern Idaho and into western Montana.

The transition from past to present plays out across a skyline in which the usual collection of anonymous bank and hotel towers is broken up by historic brick buildings that seem to be either in a state of abandonment or rehabilitation or occupied by low-rent tenants while waiting for redevelopment. The current boom has already made its mark in the form of new apartment towers, warehouses-turned-office buildings and an empty lot that will soon contain a 22-story building that will be the city’s tallest.

Driving around town, Michael Sharapata, a commercial real estate broker who moved to Spokane from the Bay Area in 2017, gave a staccato accounting of new leases, such as the millions of square feet that Amazon occupies out by the airport, or the satellite offices rented by various regional accounting and building firms.

His family is coming, too. After Sharapata and his wife moved north, they were followed, in rapid succession, by his brother-in-law in Austin, another brother-in-law in the Bay Area and his sister-in-law in Salt Lake City.

“We were looking for an affordable community that had an opportunity to accommodate all of us,” he said.

As in most of urban America, much of the growth in the Spokane area is on the fringes, where heavy equipment and the skeletal outlines of new subdivisions unfold in every direction and into Idaho. Building permits have surged, and the cadre of mostly local builders who had the market more or less to themselves now grumble that the rapid growth has attracted big national builders like D.R. Horton and Toll Brothers.

All of this happened fairly recently. In the years after the Great Recession, when homebuilders were in bankruptcy or hibernation, migration to the Spokane area plunged. That pattern shifted in 2014 when, as if a switch had been flipped, waves of migrants started arriving as already high-cost cities like Seattle and San Francisco saw their housing markets go into a tech-fueled frenzy.

By the end of 2014, migration to the Spokane area had jumped to more than 2,000 net new residents, compared with a net loss the year before, according to Equifax and Moody’s Analytics. Annual growth has only continued, rising further with the pandemic to more than 4,500 net new residents.

Sometimes they come for the chance to buy their first home. Other times it’s a bigger house or some land. Joel Sweeney, an academic adviser at Eastern Washington University, wanted the best of both: a single-family house on a quiet street that was close enough to downtown that he could walk to a good brewery. That sort of Goldilocks urbanity could cost $1 million in Austin, where he and his wife lived until last year. When they moved to Spokane they paid less than a third of that.

“You could not get a house for $299,000 in Austin where you could walk to a bunch of different stuff,” he said.

The white house with the red door sits on a quiet block near Gonzaga University. It has two bedrooms, one bathroom and 1,500 square feet of living space.

Silbar, the real estate agent, has sold it twice in the past three years. The first time, in November 2019, he represented a buyer who offered $168,000 and got it with zero drama. This year it went back on the market, and Silbar listed it for $250,000. Fourteen offers and a bidding war later, it closed at $300,000.

When Silbar got into the business, he said, his clients were “nurses and teachers,” and now they’re corporate managers, engineers and other professionals. “What you can afford in Spokane has completely changed,” he said.

The typical home in the Spokane area is worth $411,000, according to Zillow. That’s still vastly less expensive than markets like the San Francisco Bay Area ($1.4 million), Los Angeles ($878,000), Seattle ($734,000) and Portland ($550,000). But it’s dizzying (and enraging) to long-term residents.

Five years ago, a little over half the homes in the Spokane area sold for less than $200,000, and about 70% of its employed population could afford to buy a home, according to a recent report commissioned by the Spokane Association of Realtors. Now fewer than 5% of homes — a few dozen a month — sell for less than $200,000, and less than 15% of the area’s employed population can afford a home. A recent survey by Redfin, the real estate brokerage, showed that homebuyers moving to Spokane in 2021 had a budget 23% higher than what locals had.

One of Silbar’s clients, Lindsey Simler, a 38-year-old nurse who grew up in Spokane, wants to buy a home in the $300,000 range but keeps losing out because she doesn’t have enough cash to compete. Spokane isn’t so competitive that it’s awash in all-cash offers, as some higher-priced markets are. But prices have shot up so fast that many homes are appraising for less than their sale price, forcing buyers to put up higher down payments to cover the difference.

A dozen failed offers later, Simler has decided to sit out the market for a while because the constant losing is so demoralizing. If prices don’t calm down, she said, she’s thinking about becoming a travel nurse. With the health care workforce so depleted by COVID-19, travel nursing pays much better and, hopefully, will allow her to save more for a down payment.

“I’m not at the point where I want to give up on living in Spokane, because I have family here and it feels like home,” she said. “But travel nursing is going to be my next step if I haven’t been able to land a house.”

From her seventh-floor office atop the art deco City Hall, Woodward, the mayor, looked out at the Spokane River, where in the warmer months a gondola glides past her window to the Riverfront Park built for the World’s Fair. Spokane hosted the fair in 1974 as a means of revitalizing its blighted downtown, and during the recent interview Woodward pointed out the window at cranes and construction sites that she calls “positive activity.”

Spokane’s job market is among the strongest in the nation, and the virtuous economic cycle — of people coming for housing, causing businesses to come for people, causing more people to come for jobs — is in full swing. And yet, as in Seattle and California before and increasingly across the nation, the scourge of rising prices, particularly for rent and housing, makes it feel less virtuous than advertised.

The recent Realtors report warned of “significant social implications” if the city doesn’t tackle housing. The issues included young families not being able to buy or taking on excessive debt, small businesses not being able to hire, and difficulty keeping young college graduates in town.

In the dominoes of the housing market, the disappointments of aspiring buyers like Simler get magnified as they move down to lower-income households. With homes so hard to buy, rents have shot up, and the vacancy rate for apartments is close to zero.

All of this has compounded at the lowest end of the market, where the nonprofit Volunteers of America’s Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho affiliate, which runs three shelters and maintains 240 apartments for people who were formerly homeless, said it will lose a quarter of its units in the next fiscal year as more of its funding goes to higher rents.

In December, as temperatures dropped and shelters filled, advocates and members of the homeless population protested by setting up several dozen tents on the City Hall steps. The encampment was gone two weeks later but has since been reconstructed on a patch of grass on the other side of town. In the winter cold it smells like ash and soot from the open fires burning to keep people warm.

Last year, Woodward declared a housing emergency, and her administration has put in place initiatives that mirror those of housing-troubled cities on the West Coast. The city has built new shelters, is encouraging developers to repurpose commercial buildings into apartments, is making it easier for residents to build backyard units, and is rezoning the city to allow duplexes and other multiunit buildings in single-family neighborhoods.

Woodward pointed to Kendall Yards, one of the developments outside her City Hall window, as an example of what she wanted to see more of. The mixed-density project could be a postcard picture of what economists and planners say is needed to combat the nation’s housing shortage and sprawl.

In defiance of the single-family zoning laws that dictate the look of most U.S. neighborhoods, Kendall Yards has houses next to town homes next to apartments, with retail and office mixed in.

People in town seem to love it, but are leery of there being more places like it, especially in their neighborhood.

“I think it’s awesome — I have friends there, and we go down there to the farmers market and walk around,” said John Schram, a co-chair of the neighborhood council in Spokane’s Comstock neighborhood. “That’s just not my vision of what I want for me. My concern is that I move into a neighborhood because of the way that it was designed when I got there, and when somebody else comes in and wants to change that I’m going to be concerned.”

He added: “I have nothing against duplexes and triplexes, just not next to my house.”

Dragonflies are ancient insects. They have existed on Planet Earth for approximately 300 million years. Today, they look very much like they did in "dinosaur times," though they have gradually gotten smaller since then. Dragonflies can be useful in controlling mosquito populations. Mosquitoes are one of their primary food sources! As far as insects go, dragonflies are among the fastest. Some of the faster species can fly upward of 30 miles per hour. Their four wings also allow them to move sideways, backward, to hover in place, etc. And they can do all of these movements quickly and accurately, which makes them well suited to eat other insects right out of the air.

Dragonflies are not born with wings. They are born in a larvae state and eventually go through a partial metamorphosis process, during which they grow their wings. They spend most of their lives in the larva stage (up to three years, depending on the species). The adult, winged stage only lasts a few weeks. Mating is the primary reason for their winged stage. So when you see a winged dragonfly, you know it's toward the end of its lifespan. Sad but true.

Most dragonflies can be found around lakes or rivers. They breathe water through gills in their abdomen, and can squirt this water out fast to give themselves a quick jet-propelled movement. Dragonflies hatch from eggs in freshwater, and spent at least a few months (sometimes several years) as aquatic predators. As they grow they molt (shed their whole skin at once) many times. Once they are big enough, they crawl out of the water and the adult stage emerges from the skin of the nymph. Once they have transformed into the winged adult stage, the stop growing.

Most dragonfly species spend the winter as nymphs in the water, but some migrate south, and spend the winter as adults. In few species that lay their eggs in the late summer or fall, the eggs don't hatch until spring. Dragonflies emerge from the water in the warm months of spring or summer.During its two year incubation cycle in the water the dragonfly sheds up to fifteen skins. The dragonfly also holds the qualities of the water, contributing to its grace. Water holds deep seated thoughts, emotions, and the yin quality of introspect.

Since the dragonfly life cycle encompasses both the waters and the sky this creature is tied to our own transformational abilities. The key is to remember that any transformation, to be complete, takes time.

In 2011, i temporarily moved from Trout Lake, Wa. to North Bend, Wa. for a year or so ... North Bend is just east of Seattle, 30 miles up into the Snoqualmie Pass area along the western Cascades ...

I soon found myself immersed and enthralled into what i still affectionately refer to as " The Tree City" ...

David Lynch has sure made some weird movies, that's a given. The original "Dune" movie from 1980 was directed by him, and was somewhat weird too. And then there were "Lost Highway" and "Mulholland Drive", which both had seemingly illogical/irrational/bizarre plots.

The world is more connected than it's ever been before. We can communicate instantly with our friends and family who live miles apart, thanks to the power of social media. And yet... why do so many of us still feel lonely?

Feeling lonely is a normal human experience - it is something we all go through. And it's not simply a function of being alone. You can feel lonely in a crowd. Because loneliness is a feeling of being alienated from others, not feeling understood or connected - it’s a feeling that something is missing.

But loneliness is also a message that our body sends us, letting us know that we are important, and we need to become friends with ourselves again. When we feel isolated or alone, we can choose to have compassion for ourselves. We can recognise our emotions without judging them. When we accept where we are at and what we are struggling against, without berating ourselves, we can then begin to change.

In order to defeat loneliness, we have to listen to its message - You are complete, nobody is needed, you are enough!

"This is one of the most spectacular gems of the Cascades — an extraordinary blue mountain lake at an altitude of 6,000 feet that is also the deepest lake in North America.

Many natural wonders are the result of natural disasters. Standing on the rim of Crater Lake, it's hard to picture the massive cataclysm that made it. Some 7,800 years ago — more than 3,000 years before the Egyptian pyramids were built — a super-volcano, Mount Mazama, blew its top. It was the greatest Cascades explosion in the past 600,000 years.

Over the millennia, volcanic hotspots and cones have spewed lava and ash from this spot. Volcanic violence and glacier action carved the area. Smaller volcanoes came and went. The eruptive activity coalesced into what we call Mount Mazama. Thousands of years ago, it stood some 12,000 feet high. Then one autumn day eight millennia ago, it exploded on an epic scale.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the blast took off the top of the mountain and the cone collapsed inward, creating a huge caldera 5 miles across. Ash and debris covered much of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and parts of California, Nevada, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, British Columbia and Alberta. Some traces of Mazama ash have even been found as far away as Greenland.

The eruption is said to have been 40 to 50 times as powerful as that of Mount St. Helens in 1980. If you've seen film or TV footage from that eruption, you know how devastating the ash, floods, pyroclastic flows and blast zone could be. So too with Mazama. Its eruption lasted many days, burned forests, turned day into night and choked the air. It buried some areas in 14 feet of ash.

The cataclysm left an indelible mark where its debris fell, creating in many places a timeline in the soil, a distinct layer of before and after.

"The Northwest was already long occupied by Indigenous people. Evidence is found below the ash layer that has helped push dates of human occupation back to the Ice Age. At the Paisley Caves in Oregon, evidence shows people were sheltering more than 14,000 years ago. There's evidence that Mazama ash may have snuffed out ancient hearths. Stone tools and flakes found in Redmond, Washington, below the distinct Mazama ash layer have been dated back about 14,000 years. Evidence of Indigenous occupation above the ash layer is nearly as old as the eruption.

In Alberta, researchers say that for days a "dry snow" of fallout buried prairies in ash. Game, including herds of buffalo, were displaced along with those who hunted them. Centuries passed before people returned. Eruptions of the Mazama scale are rare but have the potential to impact climate, disrupt ecosystems and devastate communities.

Those who lived within view of the mountain recorded what occurred in oral stories and traditions that scientists say track closely with the geologic record. The Klamath people of southern Oregon remembered smaller eruptions over time before the mountain finally blew and ejected massive hot rocks and pumice "as big as hills and burning ash falling like rain." People were said to have retreated into water for protection. They remembered that the mountain fell in on itself and eventually rain and snow filled the deep hole left behind.

Some said that the disaster was punishment for bad human behavior. Crater Lake "came from a battle between spirits... and when the people saw what happened there, they had to run into the water to keep from being burned up," a Klamath elder has recounted. "They were being punished for forgetting the right way to live. I heard this story from a lot of the old people when I was a kid."

Crater Lake became a sacred place for many, a place for supernatural beings, shamans and vision-seekers. The lake's existence was kept secret from the first white settlers. It continues to have sacred significance for the Klamath people today whose ancestral knowledge has been passed down for hundreds of generations.

One historian has written, "As the ash clouds settled and the rumbling ceased, the caldera became a place of pronounced historical and moral significance to the peoples living in all directions."

For its extraordinary blue waters and its uniqueness, Crater Lake was designated a National Park in 1902 — the fifth one after Yellowstone, Sequoia, Yosemite and Rainier.

Crater Lake is not a finished product. Geologists say it could erupt again someday. On crystal-clear nights, the stars above reflect in its still waters, a mirror of the galaxy set in high-altitude silence.

One can reflect on the miracle of nature and its power to transform the catastrophic into the sublime. And ponder how lucky we are to get to witness this part of Mazama's story."
