Ringling Bros. Circus to Close After 146 Years
AP Exclusive: The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will end 'The Greatest Show on Earth' in May, following a 146-year run. The AP learned declining attendance combined with high operating costs are among the reasons for closing. (Jan. 14)

This reminds me to share a little personal story here. When I was around 19, The Big Show came to St. Pete Florida. I didn't have much going on for myself then, was just sort of drifting around with the four winds. No clear direction in sight. The day upon seeing on the local news Ringling was in town, the restless rebel in me saw something new and exciting to grab on to, and I drove right over the very next day to start an exciting new direction in my life.
There was no security what so ever back in the mid 80's, and upon entering the big tent I found myself right smack in the middle of all the magnificent performers practicing their thing. I was exhilarated, star struck, and immediately began putting the word out I wanted a job with the circus. (Of course I didn't know it at the time, but I was good and ready to really make a good run at running away from myself.) Next thing I knew I was face to face with Mr. Big, and I promptly laid it on the line to him that all I wanted was a way out of my present life, just give me a chance, and I'll shovel elephant shit all day every day if that's what it takes to get my foot in the door.
A few days later the phone rang one evening, and it was him! The Ringling Brothers Circus train was leaving the next day, and I had my in if I was really serious about joining the circus. Just be at the station at such and such time with my bags, and it was bye bye to the life I presently knew. You know what? I pussed out and said thanks so much, but no thanks after all, and hung up before I really even knew what I had just done.
So anyway, from time to time and all these years later, I still think back on that brief and amazing window of opportunity every so often. Who would Fred be now, if he had really followed through, and joined circus as a young sprout. No regrets mind you, but it would be interesting indeed to see the results of a critical decision never followed through with.
