Did the US Government have foreknowledge of the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor of 1942?

The people assigned to monitor radio waves at Pearl Harbor knew the Japanese carrier group was coming in as well, I actually talked to a very elderly lady in a nursing home a few years ago who was a WAVE assigned to just that task there in that time. I don't know how the lid is kept on so tightly with this stuff, but it most certainly is.

When that little tidbit came out during one of our many conversations one day, I couldn't help but dig in just a *little* bit, but not too much. Hell how could I not, she was there! I very casually asked her if she thought there was any chance that Roosevelt could have had pre knowledge of what was on the way. I'll never forget watching those ancient eyes wander back through the mists of time, for maybe 30 seconds or so. She finally took a deep breath and said "well, he must have known, I knew".

Roosevelt's Fireside chat comment "This day shall live in infamy" was INfamous indeed! (On HIS part). I've seen actual documents signed by him that he was involved with the Office of Naval Research in an eight-step program to goad the Japanese into attacking Pearl Harbor. The government had instituted the first 7 steps and nothing happened. It was step eight that broke the camel's back. What was step eight? Cut off the Japanese oil supply. That would have been a choke-hold on their Pacific Fleet. They couldn't handle that. So they attacked. The story goes that DC was awaiting telephone proof the attack had begun; then they escorted the Japanese Ambassador out of the country with a military escort. The Ambassador had been sitting in Secretary of State Cordell Hull's outer office with his own ultimatum, which he never got the chance to deliver.

As a researcher, I would be most interested in seeing these documents. I just found a book called "Day of Deceit: The Truth About FDR and Pearl Harbor", written by a Robert Stinnett. The description talks of the 8 step program you described, intercepted cables proving American intelligence had ample advanced warning of the pending attack, and more. Is this gentleman the source of those documents?
