Ancient Ireland: Newgrange 5'200 year old Megalithic Passage Tomb

Newgrange (Irish: Sí an Bhrú) is a prehistoric monument in County Meath, Ireland, located about one kilometre north of the River Boyne. It was built during the Neolithic period around 3200 BC (5,200 years ago), making it older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids of Giza. The site consists of a large circular mound with a stone passageway and interior chambers. The mound has a retaining wall at the front and is ringed by engraved kerbstones. There is no agreement about what the site was used for, but it has been speculated that it had religious significance – it is aligned with the rising sun and its light floods the chamber on the winter solstice. Newgrange is a large circular mound 85 meters (93 yards) in diameter and 13.5 meters (15 yards) high with a 19 meter (21 yard) stone passageway and chambers inside. The mound is ringed by 97 large kerbstones, some of which are engraved with symbols called megalithic art.

Newgrange was built by a farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne Valley. It is the most famous monument within the Neolithic Brú na Bóinne complex, alongside the similar passage tomb mounds of Knowth and Dowth, and as such is a part of the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site. The other two principal monuments are Knowth (the largest) and Dowth, but throughout the area there are as many as 35 smaller mounds. Newgrange also shares many similarities with other Neolithic constructions in Western Europe, such as Maeshowe in Orkney, Scotland and the Bryn Celli Ddu in Wales.

After its initial use, Newgrange was sealed for several millennia, although it remained storied in Irish mythology and folklore.

We visited Newgrange a few years ago. It was amazing. The carving on the stones is beautiful. The structure is quite big. We went inside and they do a simulation of what the solstice light coming in would be like. They also turn off the lights and let you experience the pitch black. The ceiling is amazing. I peeked in the chamber where there are more carvings. If I'm back in County Meath I'll be going to Newgrange again.

Back in time not too long ago , one of our shaman did some ritual there before heading to Canadian and USA Indians for further ceremony, Barry Brailsford put a beautifullll piece of Pounamu ( greenstone or jade ) at Newgrange.
