I'm getting a déjà-vu here. The end of the year is becoming very much like the beginning, or like the end of last year, with celebrities passing away within days or even hours of each other. It was only yesterday that I posted a thread about the passing of Rick Parfitt of Status Quo, and now only a day later, it's George Michael — with thanks to giovonni for the heads-up. It is not clear what George passed away of, but he was only my age, so "death of old age" doesn't exactly apply here.
I can't say that I've ever been much of a fan of ol' George, but I did like his mix of Adamski's "Killer" with The Undisputed Truth's "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" — which most people will remember in the version by The Temptations — as well as his performances with Queen.
There was talk for a while — at least, in the grapevine — that George would become a permanent member of Queen after Freddy Mercury passed away. He didn't exactly have the same vocal timbre and classical training as Freddy, but many felt that he did have the power and a similar enough vocal range to take the band forward, should Queen have decided to carry on. But I guess neither George nor Freddy's old band members considered it a good idea.
Admittedly, their respective musical styles were too different. George would probably have had to sacrifice his own style, and considering that Freddy Mercury had been one of the founding members and principal songwriters/composers of Queen, George would have had some very big shoes to fill. Even though they could perhaps have pulled it off musically, I think that in the long run, things would have ended in ego clashes and the likes.
